Shawne Merriman: Steroids and the Pro Bowl

by user Josh Q. Public

Josh Q. Public: No blogger can blog quite like I can. Ill take a musclebound man and put his face in the sand.

Public Service Announcement:

OK, here we go! I don’t get it. I just don’t get it. How does this cat get a free pass? Lights Out. Lights Out Shawne Merriman. So, I’m reading my brand spanking new Sports Illustrated. Minding my own business. Not bothering anybody. I see Dr. Z’s NFL All-Pro picks. OK. I immediately start looking for Patriots. I figure at least Richard Seymour’s gotta be there. Right? Wrong. OK. No worries. Whateva. But wait. What’s this? Shawne Merriman? Super-charged Shawne Merriman? You picked this guy? How? How in God’s name, with any conscience, can you pick this guy? You got a lot of splaining to do Lucy! I know. I know he’s good. I know he had three sacks and an interception in his first two games. I know he went on to record 8.5 sacks and made ESPN’s midseason all-pro team. I know his Light Out dance is fun to watch. I know he has four forced fumbles. I know he forces offenses to scheme around him. I know he bats down passes like nobody’s business. I know he ended up leading the league in sacks with seventeen. I know he’s a monster out there. Putting fear into the hearts of men. I know all that. But, we all know how did he did it. He did it using performance enhancing drugs. Illegal performance enhancing drugs. Illegal in the NFL. Illegal on the street.

Merriman’s positive test was “definitely for steroids…not one of those supplement deals,” said a source with knowledge of Merriman’s suspension. Merriman’s failed a drug test. Failed, and tested positive for the steroid Nandrolone. Pure and simple. Simple Simon met a pie man. Failing a steroid test by all accounts, is tantamount to cheating. It’s that Simple Simon. He cheated. He’s a cheater. Chester the Cheetah. Nandrolone is a steroid you shoot into your body with a needle. It has been the juice of choice for body builders and athletes for years. As a result, Merriman tainted the outcome of every football game he took part in. Every single one. Jason Taylor: “You really shouldn’t be able to fail a test like that and play in this league, to begin with. To make the Pro Bowl and all the other awards, I think you’re walking a fine line of sending the wrong message.” I couldn’t agree more. All those sacks Merriman recorded are just as jilted as all those home runs Barry and Mark McGwire put up. Yet Bonds and Big Mac are vilified, and Shawne Merriman is on his way to Hawaii. Perhaps with a Defensive Player of the Year Award in tow. In just makes no sense.

Peace out homies. Six Two and Even! josh q public

How do you know he's good without the roids? Have you tested him negative every week since college?

because he will produce next year, and the year after, and so on and so forth for the rest of his career.

Until he tests positive for illegal substances again. He has a cloud of suspicion over him now, who knows what he is on at any time.

Giambi was a Roider, and then cleaned up and is still producing at a high level. Merriman has talent that is not created by Steroids, believe me, I am a Linebacker myself and love to watch him play. All that it did for him was speed him up or bulk him up. Watch him succeed.

I agree. The advantage of steroids in-season is to recover from hurt and pain, he's not bulking up during the season... 'Roids aren't going to make an average football player great. They will make your confidence much better. He's obviously very good at football, and very bad at not getting caught. These guys know the calculated risks they are taking.

You're a linebacker yourself, preeminent authority on linebacking skills. No thank you I won't take you opinion for it. His suspension came down in October after a positive test that occured much earlier. Not exactly mid season by any means.

Steroids allow you to work out harder more often, allowing him to keep his ridiculous regime throughout the year. And yes, that will most certainly make you a better football player, there isn't a doubt in my mind.

FP, you said all it does is make him faster? Football is predicated on speed, especially as a 3-4 rush OLB, it is what makes him so dangerous, and why he has so many sacks, and is absolutely integral to his game.

It makes him a better football player, why else would he take them?

August 6th drug test, same one that got Shaun Rodgers. So that makes it offseason steroid use.

Giambi gets cortisone shots every other month for all of his 'ailments'. Cortisone = steriod.

Its not going to take a 4.6 40 and make it sub 4, you might get .2 seconds off of them, but as an Edge rusher what you need more than speed is vision and instincts. You need to be able to see as much of the field as possible and to be able to have a CORRECT gut feeling to anticipate the play direction and snap count. He would get faster because he would be able to run at his absolute top speed for longer periods of time, so his all out sprint becomes about 90%. Merriman has all of the skills needed to play LB that someone either has or doesn't. Merriman will continue his success, no question about it

Not really. Cortizone allows someone to feel in less pain than he would otherwise. A cortizone shot just keeps him from feeling the damage the steroids did to him

There seems to be an agreed upon timeline when Bonds started juicing. McGwire it isn't as clear. And yes, Bonds was really good without the juice.

Merriman gets a pass for the same reasons the Carolina Panthers got a pass. The numbers aren't regarded with such voracity in football; and there is no way anyone in their right mind thinks human beings can grow to 6'4" 270 pounds and have 4.4 speed naturally. People know its absurd, whether consciously or sub-consciously, many people realize that genetics alone doesn't allow for growth like that.

There's a big difference between 4.6 speed and 4.4 speed. Throw in the 450+ bench press and the ability to leap out of a building, and then come back to me.

Well, I'm 33 sit at a desk all day and train like a Dad, not a NFL lineman. In fact I never played more than sandlot/street/nerf football (but LOTS of baseball & basketball).

Dude, there are some freak NATURAL physical specimens out there among the SIX BILLION people on this planet. (Besides, I'm more quick, than fast...) Also, I'll never bench 450, let alone consider/dream of it... I want to 85 someday and be able to move me creeky bones. People that push 400+ lbs around won't be happy past their 40's, the bones and joints aren't meant to such nonsense... even if you weigh almost 300 lbs, trust me.

You can get just as good/better workouts with less weight (not stressing the skeleton) and more intensity. Most meatheads lack common sense. Lifting more weight doesn't make you stronger if you're lifting it with momentum. You can get a great workout with NO weights if you focus correctly...

I lift with my mind, not my balls. Your muscles can't count reps or weight, but they can feel when they're working hard...

Oh I understand the workout philosophy. Hershall Walker was king of not touching weights. And I also know there are freaks out there, super freaks in fact and they get compensated greatly for their genetic gifts. I'm not saying all of these people are steroid users, contrary actually. How can the more "average" NFL guy keep up with the growing number of super freaks; by using illegal drugs. You can't ignore the death rates of NFL players, half the 70s Steelers have died in the past 4 years. And I can jump out of a building as well, that dollhouse had no chance containing me. I cleared an entire playset the other day in the backyard.

If the voters vote for him, than yes. He served the league punishment for a failed drug test, so now it is up to the voters. I wouldn't vote for him.

theoretically, he did the crime, did the time and still stands out as a dominant selection. It sucks but there aren't rules preventing it. Is it any different than the guy who doesn't get caught?

Why is it that a guy can get busted by the NFL for ILLEGAL usage of ILLEGAL steroids and get suspended by the NFL, yet NOT get prosecuted or even INVESTIGATED for criminal activity? If he had used illegal steroids, a positive test wouldn't be enough for investigators to "look into it"? Where did he get them? Who gave them to him? etc...

But they go after Bonds and everyone he knows on conjecture and supposition?

Just saying...

Agree, it is a double standard. A half dozen panthers were suspended one year for steroid use, and nothing came of that. That is enough to constitute a drug ring, not sure what the motivations of senatorial committees are when it comes to things like this.

Well you have to remember what is considered an NFL steroid can be very different from what is a steroid that is illegal by word of the law. A lot of steroids and muscle suppliments are very legal and are sold over the counter every day. Thats why Merrimen and many others are not prosecuted despite positive test.

Anabolic Steroids in ANY form are illegal without a prescription. Me thinks he doesn't NEED to keep from wasting due to degenerative disease, to treat a case of AIDS or suffer from a case of failure to thrive.
