Shanahan Heads to the Big(ger) City

11
Vote

Reports from the Big Apple have surfaced that Brendan Shanahan, 3-time Stanley Cup winner with the Detroit Red Wings, has signed a one-year deal worth $4 million with the New York Rangers.

Shanahan has been the center of money talks in Detroit since last month, and the loss will be devastating to the vetern leadership of the Red Wings, as they already lost their Captain of 18 years, Steve Yzerman, to retirement earlier this month.

Both Detroit and the Montreal Canadiens reportedly offered the 37-year-old more money than the $4 million he is set to receive.

Shanahan made his NHL debut 19 years ago after being selected in the 1987 entry draft by the New Jersey Devils. He spent his career in the Devils organization, as well as with the St. Louis Blues and Hartford Whalers, before landing in the Motor City.

Shanahan has 598 goals, 634 assists and 2,378 penalty minutes in 17 NHL seasons, and will most likely finish his career playing for the team he scored his first goal against 19 years ago.

Nice to see the Rangers returning to its modus of operations, pre-salary cap era. You know, signing over-the-hill, on the decline, named-players for a high salary. Maybe the Flyers do have hope of making it to the playoffs next year, even though they have no team speed and a holy war going on as to whom is the starting goalie.

You have to understand the concept of football being bigger than hockey you made me think Mike Shanahan was leaving Denver for a second there

You have to understand the concept that Mike Shanahan will never leave the Broncos, therefore you should automatically assume it is another Shanahan.

Hey now, it's not that bad. I don't know if you all knew this, but hockey (NHL) gets more searches on google than baseball (MLB) does.

That's because people don't know anything about hockey so they have to look it up :-)

Touche indeed. I'm just trying to stop the hockey-bashing. It almost seems it's hated more here than soccer, and I just can't figure out why.

I don't hate either one. I just don't get the point of either one and they both make me equally bored. :-/

Christof, think about who the Rangers are not keeping on their roster and how it evens out in where that money is going. They freed up room under the salary cap by not bringing back Tom Poti. Sandis Ozolinsh, Petr Sykora and Martin Rucinsky aren't sure bets they'll return. Rucinsky is the best option and most likely to re-sign in New York. Christ sakes, people are all over the Rangers again because why? Brendan Shanahan is a big-name player? Because he's a Stanley Cup champion? Because he getting paid $4 million by the Rangers? Detroit offered more and he didn't take it. Did you see New York engage in a bidding war for Shanahan? There weren't many teams involved except maybe Boston and Detroit. Even though he's 37, he can still score unlike some players around the league. The one-year deal is perfect in my mind.

If they were going to pay someone $4M who was a free agent this summer, than the Rangers should have selected someone else. Look at the opportunity cost involved here. The signing of Shanahan is similar to what they did during the late 90's. And where did that get them?

I attempted to write the article as a "news" article with no biases in it, but now I would like to say this: YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, the Red Wings are going to do even worse than losing in the first round of the playoffs again! Now that St. Louis is good, and Detroit lost two of it's leaders, they might even finish 3rd or 4th in the division, and might not even make the playoffs! Wooooo!

Yet another sad story in Detroit. Another sports icon (not as big as Yzerman and Wallace), leaving Motown.

Let me put it this way... if this deal was beyond one year and the annual salary is still $4 million, then I'd be unhappy with it. As far as the old spending ways of the Rangers, that's gone. For someone else that's better and for a price tag at $4 million or less, it would be harder to find. As for your argument over the Rangers spenditures and where it got them, look at the roster then and now. No chemistry prior to the lockout. Now you do... I'll bet you if Shanahan signed elsewhere and for more money, I wouldn't hear the complaining, would I? One big-name free agent signs in New York for the first time in at least three years and the Rangers are labelled the "out-of-control big spenders" yet again. Give it a rest.

ok i am a devils fan and i can give my take on this.a 1 year deal for a player his age is the way to go the rangers are not reverting back after only 1 season to their spend big on a older "name" player.for anyone who trashes this, shanahan put up better than decent or average numbers last season at 37 years old.

he played all 82 games and had 40 goals-41 assists for 81 points and was a +29 that is great #'s that any team would love for 4 million. downside? (sarcasm, pay attention) they need all the scoring they can get since their goalie Henrik Lundquist can't see!! http://www.a...st_Can't_See

i had to put this link in since i have no idea how to make it so you can click on something and be brought to that exclusive.

Haha...glad to see the exclusive is getting looks...too bad everyone seems to be bashing it and claiming it is false...in all honesty, I apologize if this hurts the site, but i thought the news was interesting and it did bring more traffic. Moreover, I really do know people at the rangers and this is true...

St. Louis is good? How can you be good if you're the worst team in the league(statistically) and your first pick in the draft decides to stay in college instead of playing for the powerhouse Blues?

Really! That's got to be annoying... Unlucky St. Louis. Detroit should still be second to Nashville at worst.

Yes, St. Louis is good. From your name you are obviously from Detroit, and bias towards the Red Wings. I am from Colorado, and Bias against the Red Wings. It just so happens though, that I am correct. You probably think that Detroit was the best team in the league last year, even though they obviously were not. Yeah, St. Louis WAS bad. Have you seen their acquisitions? While Detroit was off losing two of their best players, the Blues were off picking up Doug Weight, Billy Guerin and Dan Hinote. One of the reasons that they were so "bad" last year was because Detroit was good enough to win all the games. Too bad Detroit isn't that good this year, therefore the division will end up alot more equal, and St. Louis will rise to the top. Argue if you want, come talk to me in 9 months though when the Blues are in the playoffs and Detroit is on the golf course.

  • laughs* And 272 days later, Madproof looks like a buffoon. St. Louis once again played horribly and Detroit clinched the conference. That's not to say Detroit won't see an early playoff exit. I expect they will.
And to all who bashed the Rangers' acquistion of Shanny, it seems 'tis time to eateth crow. The guy had a stellar year.

"The guy had a stellar year"... 62 points? Stellar? Hardly. And that's just on offense. Was Shanny "stellar" on defense? Um, not so much. Try "awful".
