Sex and Surfing: Is there a connection?

by user Surferpedia

The joy of riding a wave has been likened to sex. Numerous species of animal appear to enjoy being carried by the force of a wave, including penguins and various marine mammals, such as dolphins and seals. Although surfing is traditionally a male dominated sport, more and more female surfers are taking to the water. Surfers share a passion for the shape of the wave, placing particular value in the tunnel formed by the wave when its top spills forward as a curtain of water. Riding inside this "tube" is a highly sought after experience, which is said to momentarily slow one's sense of time.

Surfing's unique relationship with nature afforded it a mythic quality, which set the stage for its commercial simulation [1]. Mainstream advertising has embraced surfers and surfing because they engender a genuinely raw context, which has proven effective in attributing authenticity to just about any product. In this way, surf culture complements the role traditionally played by sexuality in advertising.

However, there remains a vital core to the culture, which is both local and global in scope. These "hard core" members of surf culture are united in their dedication to the sport's essential practice of riding waves. A disciplined surfer usually checks local surf conditions at dawn, having already assessed the prospects, based on the previous night's weather report.

When surfing conditions are ideal, social commitments are typically relegated to secondary priority. In this way, surfers defy the temporal order imposed by capitalist culture. Through direct involvement with nature, surfers appreciate the intrinsic value of the biosphere. Indeed, their world view embodies the very principles underpinning ecosophies such as deep ecology and ecophenomenology.

The surfer's lifestyle is centred on the aesthetic appeal of naturally occurring patterns and processes. The obvious contradiction between the surfing experience and its depiction to serve commercial interests highlights the contemporary western history of separation from the natural world, its utilitarian valuation and exploitation. This separation applies as much to sexuality as it does to surfing.

Perhaps Alex should look into the connection between Cricket and sex. Maybe that would get him some reads/votes on his articles. ;-)

When I was in L.A. I was telling ALL the hot babes that I was a contributor on a wiki-site and they couldn't keep their clothes on! Maybe it's just you, but smoking hot lingerie models totally dig pasty, nerdy guys that spend all their time on computers... too bad I'm cool or I could have 'scored' more in my younger days. Mrs Stiles always gets hot and bothered when I'm writing on the 'chair...

I liked the article, you've expanded on the notion that surfers are the coolest people around. What do you think it means we dump so much raw sewage into the water here in southern California that it's not even safe to swim in anymore? These are beautiful beaches and we are literally crapping all over them.

Thanks for the positive response. I've since revised it a bit, just so it ends on the topic of sexuality. I hope it reads better now.

Do you mean to say that untreated sewage is dumped into the sea on a regular basis? I grew up in Sydney, where there are now deep ocean outfalls. These release treated sewage onto the seafloor some distance off the coast, where it supposedly disperses. Previously, there was a constant brown stain stretching for about a kilometre off the coast. I can't remember it ever drifting into the beach. But, overflow from the sewers was apparently diverted into the storm water system during heavy rains, which also happened to be when the surf was pumping.

What's the trip with all this jovial banter? I'm sorry to step on anybody's toes by saying this. But, I'm worried that it will compromise the development of a genuine community of surfers through this website. Can I delete comments, if they don't seem appropriate? Or should I just remove altogether the option to comment? It seems a pity to do that.

Blah.. blah... blah.....

This is an article to be discussed not to get any of you plugged in with the kind of 'hi hi hi' talk or chat you people projected here. If you have nothing better to contribute to the article, why talk craps? There's still respect to your latest comment Anonymous Fanatic. You seem to be the only person who have read and tried to understand the article.

Suferpedia, you are not wrong regarding the connection between sex and surf. However, I'd like to add here from a different prespective.

Since surfing has globaly become one of the popular sports, one cannot forget the issue of what the sport industry is aiming at. Here, I mean that this has a lot to do with marketing strategy. This really isn't much different to how others introducing or promoting the most current car model or design.

Female figures plays a great part in the promotion and not just any female figure but of fine looking with such sultry look. The issue of a female's charming face and marvelous curves of the figure is associated perhaps with many matters that are related to sensuality. Beauty is to be looked after and treasured. Beauty gives every person the opportunity to appreciate pleasure. With female's beauty, sexual pleasure is highly sensual. The great fit body of a male surfer presents masculinity and female finds such well built and fit male figures are sexy as well. So sex and surf has a great connection. Females like hot males just as much as males' adoration of sexy female figures. However, the media such as surf magazines play such pivotal roles in promoting sensuality through advertising products such as great designed of bikinies.

Sex is as much a part of surfing as it is a part of human development and reproduction.... some girls love the non conformist attitude of real surfers... real surfers being those who disregard a conventional place in society and are as much in love with their surfing as their women. Surfing is a personal expression as is sex... one could argue snowboarding, mountain biking etc are exactly the same... a personal way to experience the great myriad of things that we can do on this planet.... whatever the case from a personal experience surfing and sex are a great combo.... enjoy..... Hihihi guys.

I perfectly agree with Anonymous Fanatic#3. There’s so much hihihi and blablabla talk here. It seems to me that many of you guys just don’t understand a single clue of Surferpedia’s Sex and Surfing. To put it mildly, many of you are surfing in raw sewage. Yes. I’m referring to Anonymous Fanatic#2’s comment. We are simply producing too much crap. Not only in southern California, but here on this webpage. Now let me join the club and share my blabla with you. First, I want to point out clearly that Surferpedia’s text attempts to create a well-constructed semiosis through the sign of the surfer and the surfing experience. To be honest, it can’t be successful for readers who are not even trying to understand the depths implied by a suspected connection between sex and surfing. Surferpedia’s text suspects the connection- or rather poses the question of a possible connection, but the question remains unanswered- the connection unproved. Here you get a look under the veil of the surfer’s body placed in a cultural context without actually unveiling it in a signifying context. I hope my analogy is understandable here. If not, use your imagination. The text is not Freudian at all, but it definitely challenges the reader in a Freudian direction with its Freudian resonances. Personally, I would drop the healthy erotic strategy of the approach and get to the more perverse pornographic side of the subject. I’m NOT talking about the final pornographic interpretation of the subject- I’m just pointing to the need of showing the perverse side of the subject that uses the surfer’s body for signification. The sign is iconic and sexual at the same time, thus pornographic in its effect – the pure metonymy of desire. Here I’d like to elaborate a little more on the psychoanalytic and psychosemiotic dimensions of the subject. There is no doubt that they don’t fit into the social significance of surfing which gives communal identity to the subject. They would rather reflect the ever-present signifying practices of advertising which target the subject for individual sexual identity by setting desire in motion. We all have experiences of the well-known setting where the phallic sign appears on the horizon and desire starts the quest for its lost object. Consider surfing this way; surfing as a setting, waves as a framework of the horizon, riding waves as the quest of desire, masculine body as a phallic sign signifying the lost object. If you use your surfing talents, Lacanian psychoanalytic approach and a little afterthought your implications could be far-reaching. And what is the female surfer doing here in the male-dominated world of surfing? The same thing as a female soldier does in a war. There’s always a feminist version of every signification and signifying practice. Like those female surfers in the latest cultural developments of surfing. They represent another way of signifying things in a new perspective. They work just fine in advertising practices. It’s not because they reveal and deconstruct the phallic nature of a culture, but because they reconfirm it. Those girls must be fit, able-bodied surfers and must look like their male counterparts apart from a huge sexual difference that is kept insignificant in the context. Imagine a surf advertisement with a female surfer who has big low-hanging boobs and strikingly feminine forms. Well… It would work, too. But that would suggest the pornographic parody of a surfing experience by crushing the real fundamental meaning behind. What I’m trying to say is that no sexual signification of a male surfer as signifier is different from the signifying practice that exploits a signifier female. The real transcendental meaning of experience is granted through the phallic signifier that is connected to masculinity, and surfing is just one of the countless examples in life. Sorry, girls…You can take the masculine role, but feminism fails again by reconfirming cultural fascination with phallocentric signification. So I’m very much inclined to think that there IS a connection between sex and surfing and it is present before that riding-in-a-tube experience, which actually leads to the closure of it. When you get the final oneness with mother nature the phallic signifier disappears in the whirling waves. Let me repeat and sum up. There is a connection… which is… Sexual because your desire is set in motion by the signifying process… Masculine because your phallic existence is reconfirmed through surfing… But when you reach the ultimate transcendental meaning this sexual connection disappears on the signifying blue horizon.

……Am I also surfing in raw sewage here?
