This Summer was the Summer for 2004 draft picks to get contract extensions, those that could not reach deals become unrestricted free agents in the Summer. The deadline was last night at 11:59pm and many of those players were not extended meaning the upcoming Summer could be one of the best free agent years ever. Guys like Arenas, Baron Davis, Antwan Jamison, Elton Brand, and Shawn Marion may all be free agents.
Now lets add the 2004 players that were not extended. Emeka Okafor, Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, Josh Childress, Josh Smith, Andre Igudola, JR Smith, Tony Allen, and Delonte West just to name a few. The only guys to pull off deals were Devin Harris, Jameer Nelson, Dwight Howard, Kris Humphries, Al Jefferson, and Kevin Martin. Howard was the only one of those players to get a max deal.
Lets throw some more names out there. From the 2005 draft the Nets’s Antoine Wright and Minnesota’s Gerald Green's fourth year options were not picked up and they will be a free agents in the summer.
From the 2006 draft the Warrior' Patrick O Bryant and the Cavs Shannon Brown did not get their 3rd year options picked up so they will both be free agents.
The class of 2004 guys should do well if they are all healthy and teams are willing to spend. Guys like Green, Wright, Patrick O Bryant, and Brown from the 2005 and 2006 draft may not do so well because their teams seem to not believe in them which means they probably won’t play enough minutes to prove they belong in the league, with the exception of Wright who had a career game on opening night.
A few more solid players that will be free agents are Sam Cassell, Tyronn Lue, Chris Duhon, Juwan Howard, DeSagana Diop, Antonio McDyess, Ricky Davis, and Monte Ellis. If Shaun Livingston gets healthy he will be out there as well.
