Seven Losses Away From 10,000 - So Close, Yet So Far!

FOURTH IN A SERIES

The Philadelphia Phillies lost the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Mets this afternoon. The final score was 6-5. This loss now leaves the Phillies seven games from infamous 10,000 loss mark. No other professional sports franchise in North America has ever lost 10,000 games.

J.D. Drubin was the Phillies starting pitcher for this game. This was Durbin’ first career start in the majors. Of course, he got lit up a Christmas tree. Durbin lasted less than 5 innings, giving up all six of the Mets runs. He surely earned this loss for the Phils.

The Phillies pitching this game also made Carlos Delgado look like he has something left in his empty tank. Delgado went 3 for 4, with a home run, two runs, and two RBI’s. Delagado is now hitting a cool .230 for the season. Aren’t you proud of him now, Mets fans?

Anyway, back the Phillies. The club started spring training with the view that they had six starters on the roster. Currently, three of those six starters are on the disabled list. Two of them, Freddy Garcia and Jon Leiber, are expected not to return in 2007. The third, Brett Myers was moved to the bullpen and made the team’s closer earlier this season, before he himself went on the DL. Myers return is expected shortly, but this return has been pushed back several times now.

Hence, due to all of the pitching injuries, the Phillies are left with sending out pitchers who simply do not belong in the majors, let alone starting a game in the MLB. So, not only will this likely cause the club to hit that magical 10,000 loss plateau sooner, it will also increase the chances of the Phillies missing out on the playoffs for the 14th consecutive year. Only a handful of MLB teams can claim to have such a playoff drought currently.

The second game of this day / night doubleheader is scheduled to being at 7 pm this evening. Should the Phillies lose the nightcap, the fifth article in this series will be written this evening.

If I were the Phillies I'd forfeit their two three-game series before the All-Star break, take an extra week vacation and come back fresh and revived from their embarrassment.

You should not be lamenting this. This is a record of longevity as much as futility. Your team has been around long enough to get this many losses. Not many others can say that.

Well, I say once the Phils hit 9,999 they should just go out and have fun. If they know they're gonna get loss 10k, have a hitter pitch, or something crazy. Man, we miss you Bill Veeck. Anyway, yeah, at least the team has been around long enough to get 10k losses.

That's a fantastic idea, they might even find some good pitching that way!
