  • The first professional football game was played in Latrobe, PA as the Latrobe YMCA defeated the Jeannette Athletic Club 12-0.

  • The New York Yankees defeated Boston 11-2. What was unique is that all of New York's 18 hits were singles.

  • Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves recorded his 41st career shutout.

  • Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins signed his first NHL contract. The two-year deal which paid $70,000 plus a signing bonus made Orr the highest paid player in hockey.

  • Billy Williams of the Chicago Cubs ended his National League record for consecutive games played at 1,117.

  • The Boston Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners played the longest game in Fenway Park history. The game was ended in a 7-7 tie after 19 innings. The Mariners won the game 8-7 when it was resumed the next day.

  • Bruce Sutter of the St. Louis Cardinals set a National League record with his 38th save of the season.

The Houston Astros beat the Chicago Cubs 8-7 in the 18th inning. The game was ended the day before after the two teams used 53 players in 14 innings.

Bobby Thigpen set a major league record by earning his 47th save.

  • Mario Lemieux's ownership group officially takes over ownership of the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins.

  • Kenny Lofton tied a major league record by scoring in his 18th straight game.

  • In his 11th career start, Bud Smith became the 16th major league rookie to throw a no-hitter.
