[edit] Biography
Sedrick Ellis was born July 9, 1985 and is currently a defensive tackle for the New Orleans Saints. He attended Chino High School in Chino, California and USC.
[edit] High School
Coming out of high school in 2002, Sedrick was considered by many recruiting services to be the best lineman prospect on the West Coast. He was an all-state offensive and defensive lineman his senior and junior years at Chino H.S. His junior year he made 108 tackles with 10 sacks. His senior year Ellis racked up 122 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and a blocked punt while forcing one fumble and recovering two fumbles. He was named to almost every Prep All-American team one could think of and garnered numerous state football awards.
[edit] Freshmen Year
Ellis arrived on campus in 2003, but after fracturing his ankle in fall practice and having midseason surgery he ended up redshirting. Ellis returned in 2004 and backed up All-American Mike Patterson at defensive tackle. He would appear in all but two games that season recording two tackles.
[edit] Sophomore Year
Ellis won the staring nose tackle job as a redshirt sophomore in 2005 and started all 13 games for the Trojans. He would end up making 50 tackles on the season including 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble. His two best games of the season came against rivals Notre Dame and UCLA. Against Notre Dame and star QB Brady Quinn, Ellis recorded a career high nine tackles and a sack. Versus UCLA he would make seven tackles and another sack. For his efforts in 2005, Ellis was an honorable mention for the All-Pac-10 team.
[edit] Junior Year
Despite missing three games due to torn cartilage in his right knee that required arthroscopic surgery, Ellis was a force at tackle for USC in 2006. In 10 games, Sedrick would end the season having 34 tackles, 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and a blocked field goal that ended up being returned for a touchdown. Ellis' best game of 2006 may have been in the Rose Bowl against Michigan when he recorded six tackles and a sack. At the end of 2006 Ellis would be named to everyone's All-Pac-10 team while also taking home the Pac-10 Morris Trophy, which is given to the conference's best defensive lineman as voted on by the conference's offensive lineman. As well, Ellis was selected as a First Team All-American by Collegefootballnews.com.
[edit] Senior Year
In 2007, Ellis decided to return to USC despite many experts seeing him as a late first or early second round pick in the 2007 Draft. He would go on to have an impressive senior season making 52 tackles, 8.5 sacks and deflecting 6 passes. Ellis would garner repeat First Team All-Pac-10 honors and All-American honors along with a repeat as the Pac-10 Morris Trophy winner. He was also named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year.
[edit] NFL Draft
The New Orleans Saints traded up to 7th overall (a spot held by the New England Patriots, who went down to 10th), to snag Ellis.

[edit] Scouting Report
Although a bit undersized at 6'1", Ellis has impressive quickness and balance that should earn him a first round selection as the second defensive tackle taken behind LSU's Glenn Dorsey. He has good potential as an inside pass rusher for many teams, but probably would see his skills flourish in a 4-3 as the one gap defensive tackle in a scheme like Tampa's or Indy's. Ellis is also not horrible against the run, teams will just be worried that he could get pushed around inside. Too his credit, he brings a high intensity level, is a physical tackler and has a great ability to read plays and locate the football quickly that will all help him against the run.
