[edit] Biography
Scott Dixon has spent his entire IndyCar career with Chip Ganassi Racing. After developing in his native New Zealand and Australia, he debuted in Indy Lights in 2000. Running for PacWest, he won six races and the series championship.
Dixon graduate to CART in 2001. In only his third start, he won at Nazareth Speedway, coming from 23rd starting position to claim victory. He finished eighth in the series championship. Early in 2002, PacWest went under and Dixon was brought into Ganassi Racing. His season best was a second at Denver, and he finished 13th in points.
2003 saw Ganassi Racing switch from CART to IRL, and Dixon went with them. His IndyCar career started off with a bang, winning his first IRL race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He is one of only four drivers, the others being Buzz Calkins, Juan Pablo Montoya, and Graham Rahal, to win his first series start. He won twice more in an effort to win the series championship.
The next two seasons for Dixon would not turn out as well. The team's Panoz-Toyota combination did not perform strongly, and he finished 10th and 13th in 2004 and 2005 respectively. Using the Dallara-Honda combination in 2006, Dixon and Ganassi's fortunes improved, winning at Watkins Glen and Nashville.
2007 was one to remember and forget for Dixon. Scott finished in the top 5 in the first six races and completed every race until the 13th race in Michigan. He also claimed three consecutive wins at Watkins Glen, Nashville, and Mid-Ohio that had him battling for the championship with Andretti Green's Dario Franchitti. A win at Infineon put Dixon in the lead, and a crash with Franchitti at Belle Isle gave him a slight edge going into the final race at Chicagoland. Dixon and Franchitti battled for the win, with Dixon emerging as the leader. The only issue for both cars was a serious concern with fuel mileage. Dixon was leading through to the last lap, but ran out of fuel with half a lap to go. He was passed by Franchitti who won the race and the championship.
