Schottenheimer Gets The Schaft!

15
Vote

The San Diego Chargers, their coaching staff decimated by the loss of offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, and linebackers coach Greg Manusky, have fired coach Marty Schottenheimer.

The move comes nearly four weeks after it was announced that Schottenheimer would be back for 2007.

And now that a new crop of recruits have signed on to attend USC, we wouldn't be surprised to see the Chargers court, and land, Trojans coach Pete Carroll.

In a statement issued by the team on Monday night, president Dean Spanos said attributed the move to a "dysfunctional situation," and that an "intense search" for a successor will begin.

"Our fans deserve to know what changed for me over the last month," Spanos said. "When I decided to move ahead with Marty Schottenheimer in mid-January, I did so with the expectation that the core of his fine coaching staff would remain intact. Unfortunately, that did not prove to be the case, and the process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager. In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyond any doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation and create an environment where everyone at Charger Park would be pulling in the same direction and working at a championship level. I expect exactly that from our entire Charger organization in 2007."

Also great news for Patriots, Colts, Titans, Steelers, Bengals, Chiefs and Broncos fans (especially the last two), at least for the coming year. I can't see a new coach leading this team to a championship.

Yea, now the AFC West will stink this year. The chargers won't be able to make an entirely new coachinng staff this offseason. They are doing what Denver is, take a few steps back in order to take several forward

Probably just one. I think if they can get a better coach than it just might hurt them a tad bit this year. However, their players are so talented, I think any coach can take 'em to the playoffs.

I think that losing Cameron and Phillips will hurt a whole lot more than losing Schottenheimer. I mean, how hard can telling Rivers to hand off to LDT 30 times a game be? I could handle the clock at the end of the game a whole lot better than Marty. Give me the job!

basic San Deigo Playbook:
  • Dive play to LT (L/R)
  • Run outside to LT (L/R)
  • 3 Play action passes
  • a couple of Shotgun plays
  • HB pass
It doesn't take a genius to run their offense. What's going to hurt them is the fact they lost a lot of their coaching staff. That take time to repair

Propf... you are a total Patriots fan and it has been made very apparent your opinions on the NFL are very, very skewed. You forgot the 'other' play in the playbook - Call your opponent "classless"

that's just in LT's playbook, Man Wags. You heard it here first. Brady-Young in the 2008 AFC Championship game.

yeah, yeah... the football world revolves around Foxboro, blah blah blah... I'm also gonna hear it here from you (second if I count my own words) - Brady will never win another Super Bowl... (you can include the MVP award in there, too if you want... something LT does have in his playbook)

LT won't make it to the Super Bowl. The Pats, Colts, Bengals, Titans, possibly Jets, and Broncos (assuming Cutler is legit) will be to much to get by. When I write my NFL Preview, it will likely have the Pats in the Super Bowl, but I think it is a toss up. You could pull and of the teams I listed, and put them into that game and I wouldn't be suprised.

Your article will appear sometime after presidents day weekend. I can't write it this weekend because I will be out of town without internet connection. I'm going ESPN sytle with "Top 5 reasons Tom Brady will never win another Super Bowl," and yes, if they won it I would have taken "Top 5 reasons Tom Brady and the Patriots are better than Montana and the 49ers."

The NFL revolves around, well, nowhere. In the 80's, San Fran was the center of attention. the 90's, Dallas. The Pats are the team of the decade.

Btw, Man Wags, what's happening to your suns? Big bad Steve Nash can't play and they stop winning. Not that my T-Wolves are at all close (they needed a Ricky Davis buzzer Beater to beat the Celtics).

Anyone who thought the Cowboys had a bad hire with Wade Phillips, just take a look around and see the pool the Chargers have to pick from at this late stage of the game.

Nah. Chargers will do better than the Cowboys. 1. Chargers are loaded for a SB next year. 2. There is no T.O. 3. There is no Jerry Jones. 4. Rivers is an actual QB, not a media created QB as in Romo. 5. LT!

This is like the story of Schottenheimer's career no matter where he goes or what he does. It always ends the same
