Schilling Loses No-Hit Bid with 2 Outs in Ninth

9
Vote

by user Pean

Shannon Stewart singled to right with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth against Curt Schilling to break up his no hitter.

Schilling got Mark Ellis to pop up right afterwards, so the Red Sox went on to win the game 1-0 against the Oakland A's.

The only other baserunner in the game for Oakland was Dan Johnson, who reached on an error by Julio Lugo. Lugo came pretty close to being the difference between a no-hitter and perfect game -- but you know what they say about close -- only matters for horeshoes and hand-grenades.

He probably let the hit through, just so Lugo wouldn't feel like an arse.

Oh well, it will give Curt something different to blog about. Anybody been over to Schilling's blog (http://38pitches.com)? Highly recommended for anyone interested in a MLB pitcher's perspective. (despite any bias/hatred for the Red Sox) Check it out.

I actually was watching with a few sox fans at a bar

I walked in during the 9th and they said..."Do you know what's going on here...its something you don't talk about..."

and I replied "OH YOU MEAN A NO-HITTER RIGHT?! HE HASN'T GIVEN UP A HIT YET?!"

5 minutes later, a ball goes past pedroia's glove and I proceeded to laugh my ass off...

Sorry sox fans, can't win them all...

This is just a question for my own curiosty. Did ESPN break into its regularly sceduled programming and show the last inning of Mark Buerhles no hitter about a month ago? I was actually watching hte game so I dont know how it happened around the country.

I think so Ed...generally any pitcher who carries it beyond the 5th gets some ESPN love and 8th and 9th innings may be broadcasted...depends on who owns the rights to games, etc...I'm not sure of all the legal and contractual things...so it may be more than just them favoring the red sox (or maybe the A's eh?)

Just curious. I was hoping so, but you can never leave it past the Easter Seashore Programming Network to give us the Red Sox and forget about the White ones. East Coast bias thing. And this is coming from a guy on the east coast also.

No, it get it. Its even more of a sox and yanks bias...the only love the white sox get is when they won the world series...To a point, I can understand the troubling covering west coast teams, but overall, all they ever do is do sox and yanks...very frustrating...especially the espn broadcasts of minor league games w/ clemens...How does a minor league game take over any ML game...i don't know...

cosmic karma for carl everet breaking up Mike Musina's perfect game with 2 down and 2 strikes in the ninth a few years ago. But the Sox needed a win like it was beating the shit out of them, so we'll take it, thanks.

Carl Everett and Gary Sheffield as the new hosts for PTI. Surprised ESPN has not already thought of that.

Brilliant. Sheffield needs his own show. I would watch it.
