Schiling Blames Himself for 133 Pitch Outing

Boston Red Sox SP Curt Schilling says that it was his decision to throw 133 pitches last night against the Cleveland Indians.
In 534 big-league starts going back 19 seasons, he'd thrown more pitches just 16 times in his career. According to Schilling last night's outing was not "risky business," because the the cold actually worked to his advantage. Schilling took full responsibility for the the RBI double by Casey Blake and Grady Sizemore's single. It was not Francona's fault. "I know people are going to bash the guy in the manager's office for leaving me out there, but I felt great," Schilling said after coming out with a no-decision on a night when he could have joined Babe Ruth and Pedro Martinez as the only Sox pitchers to win five games in April. "I know myself," Schilling said," and it came down to I didn't make my pitches. I was one hitter away from getting out of the inning."
The last time Schilling threw this many pitches was July 7, 2000, when he was with the Phillies and threw 135 against the Orioles. The last Sox pitcher to throw as many pitches was Martinez, who threw 136 on May 1, 2001.
Seven weeks later, by the way, Pedro was on the disabled list with a bad shoulder.
