Don Shula, the coach of the 1972 Miami Dolphins, though a legend, an icon is also one of the dumbest people on the face of the earth. He has gone on record to say if the New England Patriots go undefeated, they should have an asterisk. Now, I'm not an NFL historian, (my parents were in the 5th grade when Shula's Dolphins went undefeated) but what I do know is that the "great" season isn't so great if you ask me here's a couple reasons why:
1. Shula's Dolphins played in a 14 game season, so if the Pats were to go 16-0 it would be a much greater accomplishment.
2. Shula played in a non-salary cap era, there was no balance amongst teams.
3. Shula played 2 teams with winning records, while the Pats dont have much competition they have already beaten 2 undefeated teams
Aside from that, apparently he has drunk too much champagne over the years to know that if there is anything Patriot haters cannot discredit that involves this season, say what you want about the past, this season is undisputable. The Pats were caught in the first quarter of the first game of the season so from then on, it's been all clean all the way. Not to mention in the 70's teams sent spies to open practices to study plays and formations. While it clearly wasnt illegal then its safe to say it wasn't honest.
Personally since the Chiefs went 9-0 a couple years ago, which brought the tradition to light, I think its rather cheesy. You don't see other record holders celebrating not losing their record. If Tom Brady throws only 48 TDs this season, I doubt Peyton Manning and the Colts are going to pop a bottle. On the contrary, I must save Shula that you screwed yourself. In Week 17, the way the Giants pass rush been playing I don't think BB would've let Brady play that long, now you're on the list of people he has to slap in th eface for disrepect. I think the Pats now have incentive to go 16-0, well 19-0 if you count the incentive to win the SB. So, when the Pats go 19-0 and the '72 Dolphins lose relevance, remember that it was your fault, Shula.
