Sauce of the Weak - Michael Irvin

(Roc) Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, Michael Irvin, was inducted into the pro football hall of fame this past weekend, and his speech sounded more like a Billy Graham monologue than an induction speech. He basically thanked God for getting him through drug and sex addiction and was so emotional that tears and snot basically drained from his face. That is weak Mike, I want to hear about the 3 super bowl championships and how the Cowboys mowed over any team in the 90's, or how about that time you were strung out on more coke than the entire cast of Blow and then arrested on your 30th bday. Irvin has been arrested a handful of times and still given a million chances (currently an ESPN broadcaster)... its hard to feel the least bit sorry for him.. here is a portion of his speech:

"say, Please, help me raise them for some young lady so that they can be a better husband than I. Help me raise them for their kids so that they could be a better father than I. And I tell you guys to always do the right thing so you can be a better role model than dad."

God, Please help them become better Public Speakers than dad.

For real, this was one of the most important moments of his life next to marriage and having kids. The fact that he is a known drug user and is supposed to be a role model by entering the HOF made him react that way.

That's a supreme double standard. Lindsay Lohan has been arrested for drugs more than Irvin, and yet we continue to idolize her. Look at Hollywood in general, there are plenty of people snorting and smoking weed, we continue to idolize them. Irvin gets busted a couple of times, and he gets blasted.

That's a great point; Hollywood starlets definitely seem to be getting a free pass by comparison.

Thats the point , he is there to talk about his CAREER , not his personal life, atleast not the entire time He was also busted for SEXUAL ASSAULT, he's not a horrible man by any means, but he should talk about football and thats it

Wrong, he needs to address this issue because HOF's are more than just athletes, they're role models, they represent the game and they represent the history of their team.

Look, there is such thing as not following the crowd. Irvin went a different route, and it was successful.

the point I am trying to make is that he should have stuck to his life in the NFL - which was amazing, not his life outside the NFL - which was shady

And maybe the speech wouldn't have been as memorable.

great point... but memorable for the right reason? He was inducted to the pro football hall of fame, not the Recovered sex/drug addict hall of fame. Stick to football (for the most part)

I don't get it, he chose to talk about something he knows he had trouble with, instead of football stats and his humor and whatnot, and some people don't agree with that?

How would you feel if Vick was inducted and spoke about recovering from dog fighting?

How could you compare dogfighting with cocaine possession and sexual assault?

Also, Vick is a thug, Irvin is not.

I applaud this article - he's not knocking him recovering from drugs, he's knocking his speech - no the man himself or the troubles (which he chose) that he got over

you don't consider a drug user/sexual assaulter/Also cut a man on his teams neck a thug? or just as bad?

Dogfighting is the same thing as murdering an animal, did anything die in Irvin's arrests?

As I said, not everyone with a checkered past has to talk about athletics for a hall of fame speech.

So what happens if John Rocker makes it into Baseball's HOF? He's been arrested for violence several times, and has made more racist remarks than Michael Irvin.

Fine if he doesnt talk about his recovery, what I'm saying is if you have a shady past, stick to what go you there (Football ability/Tremendous team/Stats), not how you got there-bc I cant shed a tear for a million dollar baby who had to much time/money on his hands

I think you have a valid point, on the speech - just not the context it was given in... I just checked out these guys' website - its pretty good, gives a perspective that alot are afraid to go - which is why are we applauding this guy?

At least give Mr. Irvin credit for not getting caught with a crack pipe underneath his seat on the way to Canton.

Michael owes it all to Adam Sandler's "expertise" from The Longest Yard. (fyi - original was far better)

You still have to give Michael Irvin some credit. He made some mistakes but he at least trying to turn his life around. Many guys aren't willing to admit those mistakes.

Irvin is miraculously still alive, not in prison and in the HOF. I say society has provided Mr. Blow enough "credit". It is up to HIM to stay clean and NOT US to pander to a habitual "recovering" drug addict. Time will tell.
