Although it won’t count toward his all-time coaching total, Saskatchewan Roughriders Kent Austin was victorious in his head coaching debut on Friday night.

Andy Fantuz and Andrew Tate each scored touchdowns as the Roughriders defeated the B.C. Lions 24-15 in a rematch of last year’s West Championship.

It was a field goal battle for the first 29 minutes, with the Lions taking a 6-4 lead. But Fantuz made a 25-yard reception on a pass from Marcus Crandell as the Roughriders took an 11-6 lead into halftime.

The Roughriders added another field goal before each club exchanged touchdowns in the final quarter. Tate called his own number on a one-yard run, while B.C.’s Jarious Jackson threw an 11-yard pass to Cory Rodgers.

Saskatchewan’s Jamie Boreham conceded a safety then kicked a field goal to complete the scoring.

Jackson was 19 of 27 passing for 191 yards in a touchdown. Tate was 0 of 3 passing.

B.C.’s Dave Dickenson was 6 of 10 passing for 82 yards, while teammate Buck Pierce was a perfect 4 for 4 passing for 31 yards.

For the Roughriders, no passer had a better than 50 percent completion rate. Crandell was 4 of 9 passing for 83 yards and a touchdown, while Kerry Joseph completed just 2 of 5 pass attempts for 52 yards. Darian Durant was 4 of 8 passing for 81 yards.

Rodgers led all receivers with 61 yards.
