Santo Robbed Again

8
Vote

by user Joebook

Enough is enough.  Ron Santo should be in the Hall of Fame.

It's becoming comical to anticipate the vote from the Veterans Committee, knowing that they'll never elect anyone.  What's even funnier, is that Santo gets more support every time the VC votes.  What made him not good enough two years ago, but more eligible now to seven voters?  He came up five votes short today.  Five.  Ridiculous.

Santo is clearly one of the top-10 third basemen in baseball history.  His numbers stack up with anyone, and he did this while fighting Type 1 Diabetes.  Should the fact that he battled a terrible disease while posting huge numbers make any difference to his Hall campaign?  That's up to you... but I say yes.

Let's go over his achievements:

-- played in 154 or more games in 11 consecutive seasons

-- hit 30 or more home runs in four seasons, and 20 or more in 11 seasons

-- first third baseman to hit 300 home runs and win five Gold Glove Awards

-- elected to nine All-Star games

-- led the NL in putouts seven times, assists seven times, chances nine times, and double plays six times, all Major League records

-- he ranks 4th all-time among third basemen with 342 home runs

-- led the league in walks four times and in on-base percentage twice

If you are counting character and heart, there aren't many people better than Santo.  Besides being an inspiration for anyone suffering from Diabetes, his annual walk-a-thon has raised more than $55 million dollars for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Besides the fact that his numbers have earned him a spot in Cooperstown, he's one of the great people in all of baseball.  To deny him entry is ridiculous, and to do it with this painstakingly idiotic Veterans Committee is worse.

Being a Hall of Fame person doesn't neccessarily make you a Hall of Fame baseball player (just saying)

Agree Manny, but he was a great player and an even better person after his baseball career ended. His numbers speak for themselves, and his character adds to the case.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm just saying it is...

Honestly when it comes down to it, what does being in the Hall of Fame really matter compared to what he has done as a human being?

People get too caught up on status.

This "painstakingly idiotic Veteran's Committee" is made up of the 81 individuals most qualified to vote for Hall of Fame induction...all living Hall of Famers themselves. The Vets Committee was revamped in 2000 because the "old" Veterans group was nothing more than a good ol' boys network, a group of 16 retired sportswriters sitting around with a couple bottles of Jack Daniels and electing their old buddies, Rizzuto, Mazeroski, Reese, etc. The last straw was the electing of Mazeroski, in which many Hall of Famers boycotted the ceremonies that year and forced the changes in the committee to what they are today. Is Santo a Hall of Famer? Possibly, but so is Jim Kaat, and I could make a decent argument for most of the players on the ballot. But the point being is if they were good enough they would have been elected in the fifteen years they were on the ballot. It's a glass half-full/half empty scenario here, is the new Committee being overly protective of their membership, or are they punishing worthy candidates because of the foolishness of the previous Committee?

So being a HOF player makes you the most qualified to vote? I have to respectfully disagree. That's like saying the USA Today Coaches Poll is more accurate than the AP Poll. Just because they are coaches doesn't mean they know anything about the other teams. Most of the Committee has never played with or against Santo, and don't know any more about him than anyone else.
That being said, who should be voting? I have no idea... but you could find distinguished members of the media, or true baseball historians. No clue how to do it, but to see guys like Santo and Jim Kaat get denied is outrageous.

It's unfortunate, but Ron Santo will probably have to die first before being elected.

When you look at the list of Hall of Fame Third Basemen:

Ron Santo has just as good stats of almost all those guys.

Plus, he did it with a terrible disease, in an era where pitching reigned supreme, and on teams that NEVER went to the playoffs. He's a role model to millions, and should be in the Hall. I'm still pissed...

I guess me question is, what's the purpose of the Vets committee if they refuse to let anyone is? Just let the writers ignore those who are qualified and be done with it. No need to be repetitive.

Agree... but there has to be a way to get guys in the Hall that deserve it, if the voters didn't get them in when they were on the ballot. How can they explain leaving Santo out for 15 years? He was simply one of the greatest third basemen ever... and I'm a diehard Sox fan. I just think it's a crime that nobody notices how good he was.
