Santana To Red Sox?

The Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins have established the foundation of a future trade that will definitely shake Major League Baseball. The Twins have proposed two-time Cy Young winner, Johan Santana, in return for Coco Crisp, Jon Lester, Jed Lowrie and another prominent player in their organization. But, who would walk away with the better end of this blockbuster-deal if it was sealed today?

The fourth player in this trade has not been announced, but ESPN believes that Michael Bowden is a potential "throw-in." The Twins are already getting a fair deal, so I suppose that they are holding off for a bit to wait if they get better deals. I know that the Yankees were interested in Santana, and the Mets were even offering Jose Reyes.

The Twins are simply getting the better end of the bargain. Although they recently acquired Delmon Young, Coco Crisp would be an ever better replacement in their outfield for Torii Hunter. Jon Lester is a potential Cy Young winner, achieving an 11-2 record in his career at 23-years of age. Lowrie, also 23-years old, hit .298 in the minor leagues last season.

The Boston Red Sox would improve their rotation with Johan Santana. The Twins' miraculous ace achieved a 15-13 record last season with a 1.07 WHIP. However, he comes with a hefty $13 Million contract. But, since Boston shed millions for Daisuke Matsuzaka, they should be able to afford their amplified payroll.

The big name in this trade, in my opinion, is really Jon Lester. His sinister fastball whips past batters easily for a strike, although the ace sometimes loses his command on the mound. However, he is the type of promising athlete that you would expect to slap a franchise tag on.

I am fascinating to see if this trade will go through. Johan Santana will truly help the Boston Red Sox' already successful organization, as Jon Lester and Coco Crisp assist the Twins as they rebuild and stabilize their franchise. I'll keep you posted on further development!

As a Sox fan, I wouldn't be as upset in giving up Lester than I would Lowrie. The Sox don't look good at shortstop, and he might be the answer in a year or two. However, it is Santana. As long as they stick to their guns and don't trade Buchholz or Ellsbury.

Great trade if it happens for Boston. Lester is a feel good story, but Buchholz is the better pitcher. Crisp they just want to unload anyway, with Ellsbury being their starting centerfielder now. Gonna have to give up the shortstop. Two big ones gone (Ramirez, Lowrie) for two big pitchers in 3 years. If the Sox get Santana, they will win the World Series the next three years.

I think Theo knows what Santana would mean to the Sox, a pitching rotation that would include 2 potential CY Young winner, add in Dice-K, Schilling, and 17 game winner Wake at the back end of it, means lots of victories for the Sox. Lester is what he is, he's not going to dominate, he'll win his game when his control is on and he'll lose his fair share as well. Lowrie hasn't played in the majors, so who really knows what he's going to do. Crisp isn't much more than a speedy CF that can make a great catch every now an again, he's not going to hit for power, and his arm is below average. Doesn't matter if they have to throw in a Bowden or Masterton to get the job done. The Sox get Santana and their light years ahead of the Yankees. You can afford to pay him, as you have Schilling and Manny's contract off the books next year.

I agree. If the Sox land Santana, the pitching gap between Boston and the Yankees widens considerably. And the guy is still young.

MY only issue is we are still shallow at starter. One injury and we have to worry about goddamn Tavarez entering the rotation. This is un-acceptable. What's the point of trading Wins for potential losses? Lester is good, Santana is Cy but we can't keep trading away our young pitchers. It's a trade up, but man I'd rather keep Lester, and spend a lot less ($ and talent) to bolster the rotation with a decent "6th" starter and get Tavarez out of town because I doubt Schilling will make it through the year.

I'll take Tavarez in my starting lineup over every other teams 6th man, He is a decent arm, when overworked like last year he wears down, but for a month he would fill in nicely. I remember many times last year he had to pitch against most teams #1.
