Short Game Summary: Marlon Anderson hit a pinch-hit three-run homer to give the Mets a 7-6 lead, to cap a six-run sixth. This took the shaky Tom Glavine off the hook, who went 5 inning, and gave up 6 runs on 11 hits, struck out 1, and walked 3. The Mets had come back from five runs down, and had to come back again in the bottom of the ninth, after Billy Wagner coughed up the lead, the save, and the tie in the top of the inning. Trevor Hoffman blew his second save in three games, as David Wright’s sac fly scored Jose Reyes to make it 8-8. However, Aaron Heilman coughed up another big homer, this time to Adrian Gonzalez with one out in the top of the 10th, to make it 9-8, and that was the final, as the Mets couldn’t muster anything against Heath Bell in the bottom of the 10th, as he earned his first career save.
Game MVP: 2B Luis Castillo, who went 3-for-6, and raised his batting avg. to .321 as a Met. He also stole his 5th base in a Met uniform, and seemed to be a part of every Mets rally.
Runner-Up: Marlon Anderson, who hit the pinch-hit three-run bomb to right field, and you could tell from seeing it on SNY, that Jerry Manuel called that shot to right field to Willie Randolph, before Anderson even socked that fastball from Cla Meredith.
Game Snub: Carlos Delgado, who continues to struggle mildy, and hear it from the Shea crowd. He went 0-for-4, left 5 men on base, for a total of 15 left on in the series with the Padres, and also took an 0-for-the series against San Diego.
Top Postgame Quote: "I have no comment on the strike zone, thank you."- Tom Glavine on home plate ump Derryl Cousin’s strikezone
Memo to Omar Minaya: I think its about time we got some bullpen help. Pedro Feliciano was great in his two innings of work, but Aaron Heilman’s 8 homers allowed in 68 innings of work isn’t going to cut-it for the postseason run. (the memo will be positive, in games that the Mets win)
Night on the Basepaths: Mets, who are continuing to have a franchise high in team stolen bases, stole 5 more. Jose Reyes stole his 68th, David Wright stole 2 more for 28, Carlos Beltran stole his 17th, and Luis Castillo stole his 14th combined with the Mets and Twins.
Stat Alert: Marlon Anderson hit his 2nd homer of the season, and Billy Wagner blew his third save.
NL East Race: Luckily for the Mets (71-55), the Philadelphia Phillies (66-60) lost again to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-2, yesterday afternoon, remaining 5 games back. The Atlanta Braves (66-62) continue to struggle as they lost 9-7 to the Reds in 10 innings, remaining 6 games back.
Wild Card Race: The San Diego Padres (68-58) are still two games back on the Phillies, and 2 1/2 up on the Dodgers (66-61) who come to town this weekend for a three-game set.
A look ahead: Oliver Perez (11-8, 3.52 ERA) vs Brad Penny (14-3, 2.59 ERA), tonight @ Shea Stadium, 7:10 PM EST, SNY and WFAN
