The Padres season began with a bang as they scored 7 and held the Giants scoreless in front of a sell out crowd at AT&T park in San Francisco.
The Bud Black era began for San Diego as Jake Peavy (1-0 0.00) held the Giants to 3 hits in six innings. He struck out 6 while walking 2 in picking up the win for the Padres.
Bruce Bochy, on the other hand stumbled in his first game leading the Giants. The former Padres manager could not find anything that would break through the Padre pitching, and his new ace - Barry Zito (0-1 3.60) - seemed to have trouble with the speed on his fastball. Zito fell for the 3rd time in a row on opening day (perhaps teams should get a hint) allowing 3 runs (2 earned), on 4 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strike outs.
The good news for the Giants was that Barry looked good - going 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base.
For the Padres, catcher Josh Bard (4-5, 2B, 1R, 2 RBI) and right fielder Brian Giles (2-4, 2 2B, 1R) lead the attack as the team put together 12 hits.
The teams meet again on Wednesday as the Padres send Chris Young (0-0 0.00) against Matt Cain (0-0 0.00).
