San Diego Chargers extend Jammer? Why?

According to ESPN, Chargers and CB Quentin Jammer have agreed upon a five-year extension. If this is a costly extension, it is a bad one for the Chargers, as Quentin Jammer has not even been close to one of the best CBs in the NFL.

Let us use last year as an example. Though many passes were targeted towards him last year, he allowed completions more than half the time. In comparison, CB Terrence Newman of the Cowboys, one of the best defensive backs this year and drafted in the same draft spot (No. 7 overall) as Jammer, allowed completions only 36% of the time. Jammer has also struggled in limiting big gains, allowing 7.8 yards per completion. Newman only allowed 5.3 yards per completion.

However, one sad statistic makes this extension more sensible: despite these mediocre statistics last year, Jammer was still the best defensive back in the Chargers' secondary. And he still did better than 2006 free agents Nate Clements, Ty Law and Will Allen when averaging the rankings of the two categories. Therefore, this could actually end up being a good move for the Chargers if they did it without spending too much money.

Maybe this means the Chargers are going to wise up and finally have him play safety as he should have been all along. It was the move from corner to safety in college that changed him from a good defensive back to a great one. His ability to close quickly on receivers and deliver jarring hits is totally wasted in his current capacity.

He has such a great name, though.

True. Between Quintin Jammer and Nathan Vasher, UT has produced the coolest sounding defensive backs in football.

No clue why they rewarded this guy for his play. That secondary will be torched this year as Rivers struggles and opposing offenses get more possessions.

the chargers have Drayton Florence, Sammy Davis, and Jamar Fletcher as their other cornerbacks. Not much depth, but hopefully Cromartie will be a nice addition and make an impact his rookie year. the chargers barely made any acquisitions this offseason, despite their plenty subtractions.

Great name... too bad he has never lived up to it. Cant see why you reward a back for average play.

let me rephrase that: Jammer had career highs with 19 passes defended and 72 tackles -- third-best among Chargers.
