Sammy Sosa Hall of Fame Material?

13
Vote

by Thedanf

Personally, I'm of the belief that the Hall has too many inhabitants and that the requirements for admission are too lax. However, judging by the current policies, we well er... judge Slammin' Sammy's credentials.

Sosa's career statistics are quite something. From a slugging standpoint, he would seem to be a shoe-in. With 604 (and counting) homeruns and a .534 slugging percentage, conventional wisdom would say that he has paved a path to the Cooperstown. Unfortunately, he seems to have a few drawbacks.

Firstly, if you take away the slugging, there isn't much left. The Adam Dunn of the 90's, if you will. In his 17 years in the bigs, he's only produced a mediocre average of .273, and OBP of .344 (which of course includes all those intentional walks).

His second downfall is the simple fact that he's never had the complete limelight. His hay-day was coincidentally also that of Mark McGwire, who eclipsed much of Sammy's work. Shortly after McGwire's retirement, Barry Bonds shattered Sosa's dreams of the homerun throne by by way of steroids.

Steroids, however opens an entirely new can of worms. Lemme give you a quick before and after. You draw your own conclusions.

Obviously, something changed. I sincerely feel that steroid use should be a major factor when considering a player for the Hall of Fame. Hopefully the voters will agree with me. Will Sammy end up in Cooperstown? Most likely. But should he?

Opinions are like assholes. Everyone's got one.

Don't forget the corked bat, although that clearly won't matter nearly as much as other factors. But goodness, this guy's fallen far in the past 7 years. Has anyone's popularity taken a hit that bad since 2000?

But for the steroids, Sosa would have been a marginal player whose career would have been over a decade ago. Therefore, I believe, Sammy Sosa is NOT Hall of Fame material.

That's true, but how many future hall of famers from the last decade-and-a-half does that describe?

I agree that the Baseball HOF is too lax on letting people in, and I'd like to say Sosa doesn't belong. However, given the standards that we have to apply, I'd say the 600 HRs get him in--not first ballot, perhaps, but I think he makes it.

The way I see it... If McGwire's out, so is Sosa.

I agree 100%...they belong together... and if you're gonna give one a shot, you gotta give the other the same deal...

I second that argument, both were instrumental in restoring baseball's popularity in 1998. No one was bashing them for their "bigger" appearance back then. If one gets in, the other deserves to be right there with them.

I actually don't think that Sosa belongs in the Hall of Fame even if he didn't cheat. He could only hit home runs and also just had a high slugging percentage. He wasn't a great outfielder, he didn't steal bases, he didn't hit for average, and he didn't get too many base hits. He also has never won anything as a player. He is just a big time Home Run hitter, not much else.

"He could only hit home runs and also just had a high slugging percentage" Um...that's pretty valuable. The best thing that a hitter can do in any given at-bat is hit a home run. Hitting a lot of homers and having a great SLG usually make you a HOFer.

If you ignore the obvious issue, and assume everything is on the up and up, the guy has 604HR, 9 straight 100RBI+ seasons, 3 seasons with 60+ homers (more than anyone I think). INSTANT hall of famer IF there were no controversy.

I'm not sure if he should be in or not. One cool statistics, steroids or not in his era, he is the only player ever to have 3 different seasons of 60+ home runs. Although I dont think he even led the league in any of those seasons.

Adam Dunn of the 90s? Atleast when Dunn doesn't hit Homers or strike out, he gets on base (.378 OBP career)...

Like McGwire, he was a one-dimensional player (not counting his early 30-30 seasons), but also like McGwire, he was really, damn good at his one dimension. Whatever he did or didn't do, Sammy's numbers and achievements are very impressive. He should be in the Hall of Fame.

Opinions are NOT like assholes. Some people DON'T have assholes!

Opinions are more like birthdays (everyone has one of those)- they come around too often and too many people think their's is special...

Sosa is a former MVP, is twice a 30-30 guy and the top ten guys his career compares favorably to are all HoF caliber. He once upon a time had a GUN of an arm and carried his team for years.

Your Sosa comparison to Adam Dunn is irresponsible (there's more to Baseball than HRs and Ks) - Sammy is a +.270 AVG hitter,. Otherwise, you should compare him to Reggie Jackson (1st alltime in Ks to Sammy's #2) or Harmon Killebrew. Dunn is the modern day Dave Kingman.

I don't really like Sammy, but for a time, Sammy was "great" - Sosa's Black and Gray Ink numbers are right at "average HoFer" level. Unless they flat out ban everyone who was accused of enhancement usage, he should go in. If Craig Biggio gets in the Hall of Fame, he should definitely go in!

And most people look ALOT different and alot bigger between ages 19 and 39 (or since I'm 90 pounds heavier than I was 15 years ago, am I taking steroids too?)

"Unless they flat out ban everyone who was accused of enhancement usage..." That's what happened to Shoeless Joe Jackson. He was never convicted of gambling...

Joe Jackson did take $5000 from the gamblers. That is a fact. Whether or not he actually tried to throw the series can be debated until the end of time, but he certainly was involved. Agree with everything you say, Manny.

The only gun Sammy carried was in his glove compartment. Average arm, at best.

Anyone who has their own cartoon deserves to be in the hall of fame- if you haven't seen this this isn't a joke- it's for real- you can see the entire episodes on youtube http://www.y...=i19rlHmAkUA

Leading the league (i.e. the limelight) is overrated. Give me a player who consistently finishes in the top 5 over 10-15 years as opposed to someone who is a 2-3 year flash in the pan but "leads the league" in those years.

Not to cause a firestorm, but a player was inducted to the HOF a few days ago who had a "mediocre" .276 avg and a .340 OBP. Now I am NOT saying that person was not deserving, just pointing out that neither of those two stats preclude induction if you have a "clean record"

Yeah, he also slugged .447, hit 431 homers, and most importantly, he was a shortstop for most of his career. If you compare his numbers to other SS, he's one of the five best hitters at his position all-time.

No denying the other stats and like I said, he was deserving, just making the point that the BA and OBP aren't hinderances. I am sure there are several outfielders, first basemen etc with similar BA and OBP in the hall. Just as 431 HR and .447 gets Cal in, 600+HR (5th all time) and a .537 slugging (#39 all time-not too shabby) usually gets a non-shortstop in. (if they have a clean record)

I do think Sosa should be in the Hall...but now that you mention it, .344 would be the worst OBP of any HOF right fielder (Dave Winfield is currently the lowest, at .355). Among all outfielders, Lou Brock has the worst OBP, also at .344.
