Born on September 21, 1942 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sam McDowell (Samuel Edward McDowell) played for the Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates over the course of his 15 year career. McDowell broke into the bigs on September 15, 1961 with the Cleveland Indians, and put up a 6.06 ERA in 87.2 innings pitched in 1962, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Sam McDowell's best season was 1965, when he posted a 2.18 ERA, won 17 games and struck out 325 batters.
