Born on December 23, 1871 in Goshen, Ohio, Sam Leever (Samuel Leever) played for the Pittsburgh Pirates for his entire 13 year career. Leever broke into the bigs on May 26, 1898 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and put up a 3.18 ERA in 379 innings pitched in 1899, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Sam Leever's best season was 1903, when he posted a 2.06 ERA, won 25 games and struck out 90 batters.
