Sam Claphan (Sam Jack Claphan) was born on October 10, 1956 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. After going to high school at Stillwell (OK), Claphan attended the University of Oklahoma. Claphan made his professional debut in the NFL in 1981 with the San Diego Chargers. He played for the San Diego Chargers for his entire 7 year career.
