Sal Paolantonio: Barry Sanders overrated

by Isaacand

Originally from my blog

Barry failed in big games; Deion flourished

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=paolantonio_sal&id=3055421

Excerpt from the article:

Indeed, Sanders' only career playoff touchdown was a 47-yard run against the Dallas Cowboys in a 1991 divisional-round playoff game in the Pontiac Silverdome. The Lions won that game 38-6. Sanders' touchdown came in the final minutes of the fourth quarter with Detroit already leading 31-6. The following week, the Lions went on the road to play the Washington Redskins at RFK Stadium. Sanders was not a factor. Detroit took a 41-10 beating.
Sanders' postseason performance supports the notion that he was a product of the cozy, climate-controlled Silverdome. Nice carpet for easy, stop-on-a-dime maneuvering. Seventy-two degrees. Detroit faithful keeping the defensive line off balance with high decibel support.

In four career outdoor postseason games, Sanders averaged a paltry 2.8 yards per carry. He never scored a touchdown. And he never ran for more than 65 yards in a single game. With Sanders, the Lions went 0-4 in outdoor playoff games, losing by an average of 17 points.

Now, I know Sal Paolantonio is trying to hype his book, but is this really the right way to go about it.

I question whether Sal actually watched games Barry played in, including the 1993 playoff game against Green Bay.

That day, Barry singlehandedly put GB on its heels defensively. He carried the ball 27 times for 169 yards. The Lions defense however blew a late assignment and allowed Sterling Sharpe to get wide open for a TD. A sequence many Lions fans tried to erase from their memories for years.

Its important to note this game because the next year in GB, they made it their mission to let everybody but Barry beat them. They knew he had torched them the year before and they should have lost, so instead, they stacked the box and allowed that HOF Qb Dave Krieg to beat them. Needless to say, the result was a low scoring affair that GB just edged out.

Of the 6 playoff games that Barry played in, the Lions used 4 different quarterbacks(Mitchell, Ware, Kramer, Krieg).

I wonder if that had anything to do with Barry's postseason success?

Barry only got the ball more than 20 times ONCE in those playoff games. His other games the coaching staff kept him to carries of 12, 11, 13, 10, and 18. What running back could be productive with those amount of carries?

As far as the argument that Barry was better on turf. Sure, but what rb isnt better on turf Sal?

And for the record, in 1997, 1996, 1993, 1992 Barry had a higher yards per carry average on grass than on turf. A truly impressive feat considering " Nice carpet for easy, stop-on-a-dime maneuvering" that he employed.

Shame on you Sal for using Barry Sanders as leverage for a new book. God knows if you told the truth, nobody would buy it right?

He may not have the stats that some others have, but there are a few reasons for that:

a) He retired early b) Can't run when yu are behind

He may not be as amazing as Sal wants, but the dude was electric.

Well written article. When I saw the title, I immediately thought of the same arguments. Sanders remains the most exciting running back I have ever seen play live. TV never did him justice.

Barry was an amazing athlete unlike any other. But he was not a proitotype NFL runningback. You don't win when you can't pound the ball. Barry was an amazing individual in a team game.

Sal's right. You can make an argument for and against Sanders more than anyone else. Anyone who saw him play said "WOW" and didn't care that the game was an L.

He was the Pistol Pete of Football. He was going to do something you never saw before, something you'd never see again but you'd never coach a kid to play like him...

So, Sanders wasn't the prototypical NFL running back. Does that mean he was over-rated? Yes, he was a boom or bust running back which means that his value on a per play basis is suspect. But how much of that was due to him and how much was due to the offensive line?

I remember a game between the Lions and the Cowboys on Monday night in the mid-90's. The folks at ABC looked at the runs for Sanders and compared them to the runs for Emmitt Smith. On most of Sanders runs, he was making his first cut 2-3 yards in his own backfield. Smith was past the line of scrimmage before he was forced to make a move to avoid the defense. To me it was pretty damning evidence as to why Sanders had so many runs for loss. I tend to believe that it was his raw talent that allowed the Lions to gain as much positive yards as they did. That offensive line was beyond poor.

Lions coaching was terrible in those days as well. Remember that Fontes also had Herman Moore (who was Michael Irvin before Michael Irvin was), yet couldn't win. Fontes was an idiot. I used to joke that I could coach that team to an 8-8 record.

There's an old adage that says players win the regular season, but coaches win the playoffs.

Cheezero, you made some pretty good points, except for blaming Sanders' offensive line for his running for losses. His greatest strength (his outstanding agility) was also his greatest weakness. The offensive line CONTRIBUTED to those runs for losses, but you also have to acknowledge that he did too much side-to-side running that caused him to lose more yards than he had to.

I don't know how you can have watched Barry Sanders and think he was overrated. He might not have always had the best stats, but I have a HUGE problem with people going back after the fact and declaring a player to be overrated. I've seen it done (idiotically every time) with such phenomenal players as Nolan Ryan, Ozzie Smith and Emmitt Smith. Oh, look at Nolan Ryan's career ERA, and ignore his 7 no-hitters and his strikeout record that will never be broken. Oh, Ozzie Smith had a lot of errors and didn't hit well, and ignore that he revolutionized the way middle infielders played the game. Oh, Emmitt Smith just had a great offensive line, ignore the fact that using your blockers to get yards IS a skill that smart running backs utilize that not only helps get yards, but also improves longevity because they're not getting pounded constantly. I think it's time for stupid sports analysts to stop trying to determine, AFTER someone has passed their prime or even retired, whether or not they were overrated.

For Sportcenter Barry was as important as Michael Jordan. His runs were almost custom designed for a highlights show. He also helped make Madden the video game it is. People tried to make barry in the game run like Barry in real life. He is easily one of the 5 best runningbacks of all time, and much much better than Emitt Smith.

The critique that Barry danced around and lost yards is misguided. Barry had to dance around to gain yards. For comparison, you have to watch him at Oklahoma St and see how he attacked a hole(thats what she said) where there was one available

Finally someone has the balls to write what I have been saying for years.

Barry was only a good pure runner between the 20's. He didn't block, he didn't catch passes particularly well and he didn't run on the goal line.

How can a guy who was commonly replaced by guys like James Stewart be the best ever?

Not only that but he is the leagues all-time leader in carries for negative yardage.

I will take a complete player like Emmit Smith who consistently ran between the tackles for 5 yards a pop. Barry would have five carries for negagative 3 then he would break off a 40 yarder.

Sure Emmit had a great offensive line but it's unfair to penalize him for that when he produced at a record pace.

For Barry the O-line didn't matter as much, he was such a freelancer that blockers just got in his way. Bobby Ross tried to put a fullback with him and he had the two worst games of his career.

Barry was little more than a flashy novelty act who never won anything anywhere including college.

Also, as far as the Stewart thing, I got in a hurry and ran two thoughts together. What I meant to say was that not only was he commonly replaced on the goal line, but when he retired he was replaced by Stewart and the Lions actually had a better record the year after he retired.

Pheonix Superfan is trying to get attention. awwww.

The year they gave Barry a FB he got over 2000 yards. Barry always wanted a fullback if he had one from the get go he would have broken 2k more than once. He did this in his 9th year. What back has that much gas in the tank after 9 years?

In college he averaged 230 yards per game. Won his bowl game, and had 5 TDs in that game.

He use to do goal line, watch some videos are you will see. Wayne Fontes did not want him on the goal, did not want him to get banged up. He would have had way more TDs if they allowed him to do more GL. That was a stupid coaching decision.

He caught as many passes as Emmit. That argument has no foundation. Barry did not like doing passing routes but he was a good receiver when he did. He did not drop many balls and rarely fumbled. I think he ran 600 times w/o a fumble.

You can not put Barry in w/ jim brown or walter payton. He was, however, the best scat back of all time and the most elusive. He was not a winning rb and not because of his playoff perforances but because of his running style. 20carries for 120 yards w/2 60 yard runs. He did not move the chains, keep his O out of 2nd & long or 3rd & long, keep the defense of the field. The games he lacked carries it was because the other teams O had the ball the whole time. He could not block and was not a 3 down back. Some one posted he didn't have the td's because they didn't want him to get banged up that's a joke. He couldn't run down hill or through a pile and didn't have redzone power. Other backs like him can at least be a receiving threat as well; Barry had an unimpressive 352 career receptions and a whopping 10 receiving td's. The negative yardage is impressive though 336 carries for -952 yards; that's like a whole season in reverse. His o-lines were not that bad. He was impossible to block for; he never hit a hole. Barry's best play was the draw because he could be in space and pick were he wanted to go. You're all right about 1 player in football can not win a game. It takes a team but Barry sold his teammates out every play by doing his own thing. They never knew where he would be. I agree w/ Sal but for better reasons.

Ur an idiot, first if u play agianst lions who is ur main target Barry sanders. U think any running back wants to run around in circles just to make a highlight. You think he planned all his runs football is base on instinct and chances Barry knew if he could get find one opening he will shut down the defense automatically. It's like a quarterback he might go 0-3 for passes but as long as he has one good long pass for a touchdown those incompletion don't mean shit.
