Born on July 26, 1892 in Woodsfield, Ohio, Sad Sam Jones (Samuel Pond Jones) played for the Cleveland Naps, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators and Chicago White Sox over the course of his 22 year career. Jones broke into the bigs on June 13, 1914 with the Cleveland Naps, and put up a 3.65 ERA in 145.2 innings pitched in 1915, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Sad Sam Jones's best season was 1921, when he posted a 3.22 ERA, won 23 games and struck out 98 batters.
