Saban Declines Presidential Dinner

10

by user LastRow

I got it, “My Wish” is to live one day as a fly and have the momentous opportunity to fly around in Nick Saban’s melon to see what the hell is going on in there? We all know coaches are rare breeds & their profession overtakes everything in their lives, but reject an invitation to dine with the President when the White House called is a senseless decision. Who cares if it is only with George Wiener. What, I guess Nick must have the Oval Office number stored in his brand-new pink Razor. When you’re big time like he is, these opportunities must come along at least a handful of times a year?

Saban said Monday that his obligations at training camp took priority over a chance to meet the president. "It was really a tough decision," Saban said. "I feel like my first responsibility is our team. That in no way disrespects the importance of the opportunity I would have loved to have had to spend dinner with the President." Um Nick, you’re not even into the first whole week of training camp. It’s not like you would’ve had to hop aboard US One & fly to Washington for the dinner date…The invitation was for dinner with Bush on Sunday night at Joe's Stone Crabs. All it would’ve taken was a short ride down 95 South, from there follow your GPS system…I’m assuming you have one? Oh, not unless you had a previous planned dinner date with Marcus Vick? It’s hard keeping a watchful eye under now isn’t it? Let me guess you were going to reward him for the strides he’s making on trying to impersonate a wide receiver by taking him out for dinner at McDonald’s…Nicky, please tell me Marcus got a toy with his Happy Meal? He’s gets awfully angry & feels like shooting up the place if the cheeseburger doesn’t come with a toy.

Trying to save these floundering Dolphins is a task in itself…All your resources, football abilities & strategies will be needed in accomplishing this. Now should this bonehead decision really be that surprising to us, probably not. This is the same individual who’d rather ride out a hurricane at the Dolphins Practice Facility preparing for next week’s game against San Diego, instead of being home with the wife and kids to ride the storm out. Gees, family comes second I know, but you could’ve at least brought the whole family to the facility with you. "We all know Nick is serious about what we're doing here and is committed to it," defensive end Jason Taylor said. However, this one I’m still trying to figure out? Telling us that it didn’t matter if you won or lost the game…That you were looking down the road at a press conference last year.

It would appear Coach Saban isn’t all interested in the ever-growing gas prices, “weapons of mass destruction”, disaster relief aid, after all you do live in a hurricane state. Oh that’s right, nothing to worry about with that, your governor is brother Jeb….You’re in good hands there. At least you could’ve picked his brain on what Tom Brady knows…Get some possible insight that might help on October 8 & December 10. Oh well though, you’re just to worried about your first preseaon game. Since your in regular season form already less then a week into camp, who’s your starting quarterback? Let’s see, One’s a captain of a boat whose knee looks like shredded cheese. While the other has a great taste for cheese and wine, while playing the piano in his down time. If that’s not a winning duo, I don’t know what is? Although Nick, you are the expert here not me, so missing Wiener Bush’s dinner engagement, well it must’ve been something more important than the first week of camp? Perhaps it would’ve been a different story if this request was sent by Bill Clinton…Looks as if Nicky might be a Democrat? Congraulations for blowing off the President…Few men are able to do that! This is almost as funny as little Danica Patrick’s temper tantrum yesterday. I can sympathize I used to do that when I was five, but I never use to clean up after myself. I just feel sorry for that poor innocent bug that had a tragic end to its life after she stomped all over it…Hey Fly, I need the report on your findings in Saban’s head. Let me guess, nothing?

I cant blame Saban for what he did. It was a shrewd choice but a good one. He has a new and a young team that is on the verge of possibly doing something special. He needs to focus on the job that is at hand. Having dinner with the Pres would cause a major distraction for the duration of camp even it was for only evening. I mean lets be real its not like Bush was gonna have dinner with him and discuss his exit strategy for Iraq.

I think that Saban made the wrong decision not to have dinner. It is pretty disrespectful, and while I disagree with this President and despise pretty much everything he stands for, I still respect the office. But here's the question nobody's asking - why is Bush asking to have dinner with Saban? He's all but ignoring what's going on the Middle East, but he can make the time to have dinner with an NFL coach? People are asking where Saban's priorities are, when they should be asking where our President's priorities are.

It's not "disrespectful" to decline an invitation from anyone regardless of who they are. Whatever Saban's reasons are, there is nothing wrong with him not being able to go have dinner with the president.

I get what your saying, and yes he is the President and holds the most powerful office in the world. However, Saban has a job that needs to be done. Unlike Bush he can be fired if he fails to succeed at his job. You are right though Bush does have more important things to do than meet with the Dolphins head coach.

Nick Saban's job is so intense that he can't take an hour to have dinner with the President during the first week of training camp? Sorry, not buying it.

Just like asking Tom Brady to sit by the first lady as he rambles on about what. Why Tom Brady? What does he know about politics? The guy can read defense, but can he find Osama? One thing for sure, he can't do any worse than Mr. Weiner.

well saban's decision earned the respect of every guy in camp, and team captain jason taylor was very impressed by the decision. Saban has his priorities straight, and the team has infinite respect for him now. like bigppup said, its not like bush was going to discuss anything of importance with saban and dan marino.

"Well, birthdays are merely symbolic of how another year's gone by and how little we've grown. No matter how desperate we are that someday a better self will emerge, each flicker of the candles on the cake we know it's not to be. That for the rest of our sad, wretched, pathetic lives, this is who we are to the bitter end. Inevitably, irrevocably. Happy birthday? No such thing."

Ah, how could I forget my favorite Seinfeld scene of all! "Let me tell you something, funny boy... You know that little stamp? The one that says New York Public Library? Well, that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole helluva lot. Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before - flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're thinking... Why's this guy making such a big stink about old library books? Let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without libraries, people like you and me.... Maybe. Sure, we're too old to change the world. What about that kid, sitting down, opening a book right now in a branch of the local library and finding pictures of pee-pees and wee-wees in The Cat in the Hat and The Five Chinese Brothers. Doesn't he deserve better? Look, if you think this is about overdue fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped. Or maybe that turns you on, Seinfeld... Maybe that's how you get your kicks... You and your goodtime buddies... I've got a flash for you, joy boy. Partytime is over."

The sea was angry that day, like an old man trying to return soup to a deli. I got about fifty-feet out and then suddenly the great beast appeared before me. I tell ya he was ten stories high if he was a foot. As if sensing my presence he gave out a big bellow. I said, "Easy big fella!" And then as I watched him struggling I realized something was obstructing his breathing. From where I was standing I could see directly into the eye of the great fish! From out of nowhere a huge title wave lifted, tossed like a quark and I found myself on top of him face to face with the blow-hole. I could barely see from all of the waves crashing down on top of me but I knew something was there so I reached my hand and pulled out the obstruction.
