One source close to the situation believes the deal is for one year guaranteed and could include an option year.
Things that factored into this decision:
1. Boston looks like they are going to lose to the Indians, who knocked the Yanks out in four games earlier this postseason.
2. The comments that supposedly came from Mattingly's close friend reported by The Star Ledger two days ago. Ultimatly denied by his agent, the statement that "it's not my time" might have been reflective of his relationship with Torre, as he is very close with the Yankee manager. The denial was probably to hold Donnie's value as a canidate high for not only the prospective Yankee deal, but for future managarial positions.
3. The transition of power in the Yankee front office.
4. The reluctancy of others (Girardi, Mattingly, Pena) to take over for after their friend was fired.
