SF Giants Preseason Update: Tejeda, Matsui, Inge, and Rios

So their has been a lot of buzz and trade talks about Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, the young foundation of this San Francisco Giants team.  There has also been mentions of trading away other young pitchers Noah Lowry and Jonathan Sanchez.  General Manager Brian Sabean's main idea going into the Winter Meetings is to try and obtain positional holes while still ubtaining their young pitching staff.  His hopes are to keep Lincecum, the very young and exciting pitcher that has the ability to be a 20 game winner if he gets the proper offensive production from his teammates.  Many names have been coming up in who might be coming to the Giants such names as Miguel Tejada, Hideki Matsui, Brandon Inge, and Alexis Rios.  All four players are capable of filling holes either positionally or middle of the order in the Giants line-up.

+Miguel Tejada was mentioned,at the beginning of the Winter Meetings, as a potential player to fill the third base spot.  The teams seemed to have minor discussions in which GM Brian Sabean said are dead, so no on Tejada.

+Now it seems that Hideki Matsui could be heading to San Francisco.  The Giants and Yankees seemed to have some minor discussions involving Matsui, but with a no trade clause in Matsui's contract, their could be a roadblock.  It seems that with a crowded outfield in the Yankee world, it would be logical for Matsui to accept any trade to move him to a San Francisco team that would have him in the starting line-up everyday, but does he want to give up his world series chances?

+With Tejada out of the talks for a third baseman, Brandon Inge came into the talks.  With Cabrera taking his spot it seems the Tigers would be willing to trade him away, but the one thing holding the Giants back is Inge's bigger salary.

+Finally there is Alexis Rios, who was offered by the Blue Jays to try and aquire Lincecum and now it seems that Cain could take Lincecum's place in this trade.  Either way Rios fills the big hole in the Giants line-up.  The Giants and Blue Jays have gone back and forth adding and subtracting players from the deal and it has come down this; the only way the Giants get Rios is if they give up either Lincecum or Cain.  The two players that Sabean didn't want to have to give up at all this winter.  So will Sabean pull the trigger?

Overall the Giants really need to fill those holes in the line-up because even with Lincecum and Cain only giving up one to four runs a game if the Giants don't score their efforts will be useless.  The Giants did lose someone to the horrible Rule 5 Draft, a player I mentioned earlier in the Giants Off-Season Preview that Travis Blackley was a capable minor league starting pitcher that could replace Lowry or Sanchez in the rotation pending they were traded, but Travis Blackley, thanks to the rule 5 draft, was picked up by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Matsui will be in the Yankees starting lineup everyday, so I don't see why he would go to SF so he could finish last.

The Giants main priority should be getting some sort of starting lineup in order, their pitching staff is fine. I disagree, I think Giants should def. go after Tejada. Great article btw. -Kwass
