SF Giants: Can Things Get Worse?

by user Trecole696

Tuesday's loss marked the 6th in a row for the Giants, and their June fell to a pathetic 5-13. Things have gotten so bad that the Giants are not only 12 games out of first place, they are trailing the Rockies by 6 games and are in the NL West cellar. Say what you want about the average age of this team and yes they have one of the worst bullpens in the NL, but based on their starting pitching alone, this team is underachieving. Coming into this season,

I, like a lot of people, expected the Giants to be a team that would hover around the .500 mark for most of the year. I thought that maybe in the open NL West, and NL in general, they would be in position at the deadline to possibly add a bat and a reliever to make a push for a playoff spot. I knew there were holes in this team, but I didn't think that they were this blatant. The fact is, the Giants are and will continue to be the team you are currently watching. I hate to say it, but there isn't going to be a turnaround. Sure, the team may string together 5 or 6 wins and restore some hope and life back into AT&T Park, but I highly doubt this team will come within striking distance of first place again. Omar Vizquel's and Rich Aurilia's bats falling off the face of the earth, and the starting pitching is now starting to return to earth. The Giants were a bad team when all their starters where pitching terrifically, now look what they are when they get average pitching. One of their top hitters (Bonds, Durham, Klesko) are always injured and never in the lineup together. If they are, they're hurting. And I don't even want to mention the bullpen today.

There have been some ups and downs from the Giants' rookie class this season. One of the only bright spots on the team as of late has been Nate Shierholtz. Shierholtz came up for Daniel Ortmeier over a week ago, and has really seen the ball well up at the big league level in his small sample of time here. He has 7 hits in only 18 at-bats and has hit safely in all but one game he's taken an at-bat in. A very small sample, yes, but with this bunch these days, a small positive gets magnified, and Shierholtz has been that small positive.

I am looking forward to seeing Freddy Lewis returning from injury and seeing watching when he and Shierholtz are both in the lineup along with Kevin Frandsen. If the Giants are still 10 or more out in July, which is looking more and more probable by the day, why not play the youngsters the rest of the way? At least Giants fans would be getting a glimpse at people who could help turn this around in the future, rather than the guys who are sinking the franchise into the cellar.

The Giants gave up on this season when they elected to play a 40+ yr old gimp in the outfield.

They certainly wouldn't be anything without Bonds, but they aren't much with him, that's for sure. Bringing back Bonds next season would be the real mistake. I think signing Feliz, Aurilia and Roberts while not adressing the bullpen was more of the problem than resigning Bonds.

Did the Giants front office really think this line-up was competitive during the offseason? Signing Bonds for 2007 had everything to do with the Aaron record and nothing to do to make this team better in the future.

considering there's about a 100 games remaining in the season, I would say yeah.

At this point in the season, the Giants should figure on being sellers. Fransden impressed my in his series against the phils and I like him, but the team, as a whole should dump some of the aging players and prepare to build a real team for the next few years...guys like vizquel, durham, aurilia, klesko and the like should be traded, allow young guys to get time and accumlate some talent...its hard to see your team give up, but the giants should do this to better their club for the long haul and the future... Bonds should (and will) be traded in july...assumably (and for the giants, hopefully) he'll break the record before July 31 and the giants will move him accordingly, he really has no value to them after 756...

Well they started the season 4-12 and have lost their last 6. Take out those games and they are 26-22. Just looking for a silver lining here. They are 6th in era an 3rd in quality starts. They need a closer badly and they have no power.

Things will hit rock bottom the game Bonds sets the home run mark. Hopefully, he will immediately retire. Would be nice if he retires before this, but I am not getting my hopes up.

I love the line: "Things have gotten so bad that the Giants are not only 12 games out of first place, they are trailing the Rockies by 6 games and are in the NL West cellar." You know your team sucks when other teams declare a horrible season by being worse than you. Have no fear, I believe my Rockies can slide down and perhaps defeat the Giants (for the worst record).

Giants gambled that Bonds would do better than he is this season. After he passes Aaron if he does I look for Giants to dump him and his salary if they can find any takers.

I'm guessing Bonds will be shortly wearing Yankee pinstripes before being handed another uniform that also has black & white stripes.

Yeah, Bonds started out hot, and the Giants were in it early. Then he cooled, and so did the team. I guess they now will realized they cannot build a team and lineup around a 43 year old player. It's just a shame that Brian Sabean, who gets paid 2 million a year to figure those things out couldn't see this coming, and we all could.

LOL, Nice one Tyrone, but I think Barry will go to Anaheim if he decides to go the AL.

MECU, the Rocks actually have some talent and it's young talent so they should get even better. They still have some suspect pitching, but things are getting better in Colorado. If they play .500 ball the rest of the way like they have been, the Giants won't catch them.
