SF Giants: Benitez Gone, Nothing Changes

by user Trecole696

The Giants opened their weekend series in Philadelphia with a bang, scoring 13 runs against the Phillies while getting another dominant performance from Matt Morris. This all came fresh off of a tough series in New York, and right after the team traded the enigma that is Armando Benitez. The popular theory around the bay area sports radio stations and among the media was that the problem had been removed from the team, so the team would and should play better. I can see how not having Benitez around could ease some of the tension in the clubhouse and it saves the Giants fans the agony of watching him pitch for this team any longer. However, the fact that Benitez is no longer on the team does not change the fact that this lineup is still very old and unproductive. It doesn't change the fact that the rest of the bullpen, outside Brad Hennessey and occasionally Kevin Corriea, is so poor, that any lead late in a ballgame is never safe, no matter who it's against or where it is. No, the fact that Benitez is gone does not change the fact that this team is still a .500 ball club at best, and that's only if they are clicking well together in a facets of their game. I'm not at all trying to defend Benitez, I'm just trying to point out that Brian Sabean has messed this team up in a lot more ways than just Armando Benitez, and even though Benitez is gone, the expectations should not change at all with this team. Right now they are still 2 relievers and a decent hitter away from even being mentioned as playoff contenders. The division has gotten a lot better, and the Giants haven't.

We got a little taste of Brad Hennessey as he closed the night after epic blow up in New York and I think Hennessey will do an adequate job. He gave Giants fans a perfect ninth inning, which is something we haven't seen in a while. Will he be a lights out type closer? Probably not, but he should be better than what they've had there for the past 4 season's, really ever since Tim Worrell saved 40 games in 2003. Hennessey was brilliant out of the bullpen last season before being moved into the rotation, and he's been the Giants best so far this season. But as Brian Sabean said, it really won't matter who's closing if the team can't score runs. They have looked a lot more live in Philadelphia this weekend than they did at any point in New York. They ran into one of the best young pitchers in the game in Cole Hamels on Saturday afternoon, but have scored 21 runs in the other 2 games. Ray Durham and Ryan Klesko both were back in the lineup this weekend and it showed. They just haven't been able to get a consistent offense and consistent relief pitching together. The starting pitching continues to carry the weight, and is keeping the team in every game, but it's either the offense or the bullpen that let's the team down night after night. When a team keeps finding new ways to loose, they aren't a very good squad, and that's where the Giants are right now.

The phillies lineup has showed that they will try to bet back into the game despite their terrible pen...today was just another example... Even if you look at the terrible D-backs series, they still tried to get back in it (and might have won 2 outta 3, had the pen not given up some serious runs)...

No doubt the Phills can rope. If they can get Gordon and Meyers healthy, it should help out their pen, which looks about equally as bad as the Giants' at this point. That ballpark is a joke though. Victorino's home run would have not even hit the warning track in San Francisco.

contrary to popular belief both teams have to pitch there...

also, left field at the bank is 329, its 339 in san fran...

However, this year philly has seen more homers than usual, but last year they were closer to the norm of home run parks. Stats suggest things will cool off and go back to an average of 1.2 homers par game...san fran is a pitchers park...

J- Yes, both teams have to pitch there, not complaining, just stating facts. That park is fricken tiny, you cannot even come close to comparing that place to AT&T. The ball carries very well there, and the outfield is nowhere near the size of most ballparks in the bigs. There is no way that the Bank is "the norm" as far as ballparks go.

Yeah, that's great, but the statistics suggest that its simply a hitters' park and not much more... I hear complaining, but our pen only gave up 1 run...your's gave up a few more...

You hear complaining from me? Again, This park is a joke and my team scored 13 runs there on Friday night. Again, Victorino's home run to left the other day is a fly out in 80% of the other ballparks out there. The Giants got a couple aided by that yard to, it evens out. Again, I'm just saying, and if you check all my other comments, this park is a joke, not complaining by any means buddy.

What facts? The fact that its 10 feet shorter or that fact that it is 6th in home runs or that its 8th in runs total...and yet, both teams had 9 innings to hit 329 feet... Go root for bonds or something...

I personally don't like watching baseball games where a routine fly out carries out of the ballyard. But that's just my opinion.

it's 10 feet...and there are 6 other parks that have more home runs...and we have ryan howard... Yes its a hitters park, but it doesn't have an inexorbant amount of HRs or runs...

The dimensions are small and the ball carries great. Not a good mix. If only they could move the fences back 15 feet or so, it would eliminate a lot of those cheap pop up home runs. True, there are a lot of ballparks out there that cater to hitters, but normally there is at least a few parts of the field that you can pitch too.

J- Your still misunderstanding me. I don't like the yard, I'm not saying the Giants didn't sweep the Phills because the yard is unfair. Both teams play there as you say. Once again, I don't know how to say it any clearer, that park is a joke. Nice looking yard and all, but easily one of the top 5 easiest places to hit in all of baseball. Don't take it personal man.
