S.J. Whitman (S.J. Laverne Whitman) was born on August 17, 1926 in Hollis, Oklahoma. After going to high school at Hollis (OK), Whitman attended the University of Tulsa. Whitman made his professional debut in the NFL in 1951 with the Chicago Cardinals. He played for the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cardinals over the course of his 4 year career.

Most people believe that 1951 was S.J. Whitman's best year, as he picked off 7 passes.
