Ryne Sandberg - Legend!

by user Ronnie Foreman

In my opinion, Ryne Sandberg is the best 2nd baseman to ever lace up the cleats and take the infield. I know, I know, some of you would say Joe Morgan is, some Craig Biggio and still others would throw Jeff Kent's name in there.

But let me tell you, from watching all of those play, I never seen anyone as fluid as Sandberg at the bag. A nice throw over to first, smooth double play. And at the plate, well he was the soul of the Cubs offense for years.

Just look at these lifetime numbers: 2164 games, .285 Batting Average, 282 Home Runs, 1061 Runs Batted In, 344 Steals. Pretty impressive for the period of time that he played. 1984 NL MVP. 10 time All-Star, 9 time Gold Glove winner, 7 time Silver Slugger award.

All these stats were tops among 2nd basemen when he played. Some may have had more home runs, more steals, more RBI but none had the all-around game of Ryno. Finally, you couldn't find a finer person off the field.

Yes, I like Ryne Sandberg as the best 2nd baseman ever. I even named my son after him.

Honus Wagner stats dwarf anything Sandberg ever did.

Honus Wagner is in the HOF as a SS, his predominant position. He did play a little 2B, 57 of his 2775 games. But yes, his stats do dwarf anything Ryno ever did.

How about these stats? 2,259 games .358 AVG, .434 OBP, .577 SLG, 301 HR, 1584 RBIs, 135 SB. The hitting numbers are the best of any 2B all-time. RBIs are only 15 short. And a .960 fielding percentage is nothing to shurg at either, before Gold Gloves and All-Star games. Rogers Hornsby is my vote for best 2B of all time.

Don't change it now...Hornsby was good yeah. For his time...and that time was a long time ago....I don't think he would have put up those numbers in the same time Sandberg did. Whole different era of ball.

Wagner and Sandberg played in completely different eras...cy young's numbers dwarf almost every pitcher but its not the same... Also, sandberg is part of one of the worst trades in phillies history...he was essentially a throw in player...

Roberto Alomar is the only comparable player I can think of if we aren't comparing across time. He had more Gold Gloves, a higher career AVG, more RBIs, more stolen bases, more loogies, he just hit less home runs. (10 Gold Gloves, .300 AVG, 1134 RBIs, 474 SB, 1 Giant Loogie, 210 HR). Alomar played in the AL, Sandberg in the NL, take your pick.

I think Sandberg was dominant for his position during a time period when the National League and baseball in general lacked good second baseman. His MVP, All Star appearances, and defensive accolades are great. But, I wonder how he would have faired with a Jeff Kent/Robby Alomar/Biggio like player, or a even a guy like Soriano? That's the key question for me. I can't really judge Hornsby because I never saw him play.

He was good in his day but not the value to his team that Sandberg was. Reds could win without him. Astros, well they couldn't win either way. Phillies had cast around him with Rose, Carlton and Schmidt. Cubs could have not won as they did without Sandberg.

Morgan took the phillies to the world series too... he was the catalyst to the reds team - Honsby was the best 2B, was the Bonds of his time with the media, regardless -Sandberg is a Hall of Famer

If were strictly talking defense, then I am going with Sandberg. However, I am not going with Sandberg's .344 OBP to Hornsby's .434. I realize it was different times, but Hornsby would have still had a .400+ OBP in Sandberg's time.
