Russ Ortiz Designated for Assignment

The Arizona Diamondbacks designated RHP Russ Ortiz for assignment. Ortiz went 5-16 with a 7.00 ERA in 28 starts for the Diamondbacks after agreeing to a four-year, $33 million contract prior to the 2005 season. The 32-year-old's woes are most like attributable to his loss of velocity.

Just another guy they grossly overpaid for that year, along with Troy Glaus and others. He was getting Andy Pettitte-type pay for Brandon Backe-type numbers. His best season was a 3.29 ERA, and he was three years removed from that kind of performance when the D-Backs signed him. In the intervening years, his ERA steadily rose - 3.61, 3.81, 4.13. He had one other year with an ERA over 4.00, and one other year with an ERA over 5.00. He had a pretty good lifetime record of 103-60. But, his ERA of 4.00 (all in the NL) was less than dazzling. I really wish teams would stop overpaying for bad pitching like this. The cost gets passed on to the ticket holder. It's really not fair to us.
