Rumor: Astros offer Clemens $12 Mil

12
Vote

Yes, it's from a message board, but it is repeating the 50% credible Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio. M&M suggested that this price makes it impossible for the Yankees or Red Sox to offer Clemens and amount that makes up for the advantages of being in Houston, such as the proximity to Clemens' home, being in the NL, and of course, having no state income tax.

He can, but can he get a _lot_ more? Someone may offer him $14m, but no one is going to offer him $24m. He'll probably stay in Houston for a "mere" two million.

But the main issue isn' the money. The Astros got Clemens bargin basement in 2004 because he wanted to be in Houston. The proximity to family and the ability to stay at home and rest during road trips is the biggest factor for Clemens. The only teams that can even think about offering that are the Astros and Rangers.

Don't forget his mutual non-sexual crush on Andy Pettitte

lol...true. Can't forget that. Not to mention the fact that he said that Brad Ausmus is the best catcher he's ever thrown to.

Perhaps the only reason he hasn't left the Astros yet is because they haven't given him the Hummer yet. No I don't mean the same ones he's shelled out during his career.

I did think Clemens was going to the Red Sox, but with Houston's hot start, and all the other factors, I think he'll definitely be an Astro again this year.

Yeah, I expected Houston to exceed everyone's expectations this season, but I didn't think they'd get a start like this. Especially considering the way their pitching staff looked at the beginning of the season. I wouldn't have guess they'd be 6th in the MLB in ERA, and last I checked their starting rotation had the best ERA in the MLB. Considering how little experience their rotation has (outside of Oswalt and Pettitte), that's pretty amazing.

I wonder if he will be as good this year? Has he been training?

Clemens will be an Astro this time next month. I think someone mentioned the situation he had last year of being able to show up only when he needed to pitch, not going on road trips, etc. Not to mention his son is in the farm system and could be called up by the end of the year. Father and son on the same field. New York and Boston cant offer that. And think of it this way...12 mill for about 4 months of pitching which equals to 3 mill a month. How could he pass that up?

If they were on different teams, Clemens might be compelled to throw at him again...

True, but I seriously doubt Coby will be called up at the end of the year. If he is, it will only be so that they can be in the dugout together. He's gonna be good, but the way he's playing right now would not warrant a callup. He's only 18 or 19 years old.

Koby Clemens is hitting .186 with 1 home run and 10 RBI's, and has played in 15 games this year so far. That's not really 40 man roster material there. Rumor has it, the Astros dangled the "we'll call your kid up when rosters expand" carrot in front of Roger to entice him to sign. As great of a story as that would be, I hope Roger turns that down, if he stays with the Astros. An unwarranted call-up of Kobe could really throw a monkey wrench into the career of the poor schlub who would have been the 40th guy on the roster.
