Rules the NFL needs to change

1. Get rid of the tuck rule. This is not directed toward the Patriots, but if a QB tucks the ball, has stopped his throwing rotation, how is that an incomplete pass? A fumble is a fumble, not a rule that can bend around the idea of a fumble.

2. Fix the roughing the passer calls. It's one thing if a QB throws the ball, then gets blatantly hit 3 seconds later. But it's another thing, to have the ball thrown, and have a little tap on the head equal an automatic first down. They need to fix that one.

3. No more coin tosses to decide who gets the ball first. For the 34 people that watched the XFL, you noticed that you would have two guys running after the football right? Coin tosses are for sissies, let them get the football themselves.

4. NFL Network dude Bryant Gumbel. It's bad enough that all the cable companies are making you pay to watch the NFL Network. It's also bad that the NFL can't think out of the box and stupidly decide put the online stream to NFL Network subscribers only. But why did they feel Bryant Gumbel was the best option for play-by-play? I'm not saying get rid of him (although he is awful), but let us at least hear him screw up on TV so we bloggers can write about it in the morning.

Any more suggestions?

The coin toss is fine, and has very little affect on the outcome of the game. The Rougher the passer needs to be fixed. The league has gone into overdrive trying to protect QB's/ The Tuck rule should go simply because most dont understand it or how to properly apply it.

The only rule I care about the TD celebrations. That rule sucks, get rid of it.

The roughing the passer rule needs to be changed. 15 yards and a first down for a bump is ridiculous! The tuck rule is rare and ambiguous enough that no one would miss it if it were gone. One radical rule change I'd love to see is the prohibiting of "taking a knee". What? Is asking your running back to dive into the line too much to handle. Plus, if your player can't execute 2-3 additional running plays at the end of the game, maybe you don't deserve the win!

See "Miracle at the Meadowlands", not that I'd complain about that one.

Agreed! As long as it doesn't directly demean the fans or the other team, let guys celebrate!

The coin toss is only a problem for overtime games, where it can truly impact who wins and loses. With that in mind, I'd say the NFL should do away with sudden death and just play the whole 15 minutes to completion.

I'd actually just adopt the college rule if you ask me. The CFL does it.

Nah, I love the sudden death. No problem with the Coin Toss. If you're defense sucks, you don't deserve to win the game.

OMG, the college football rule is HORRIBLE! Worst football rule ever made. If you get rid of sudden death then I'm for the 15 minute rule.

If they tweak it so that you start from the 50 yard line than that would be better.

I think you should play a 10 point rule. Since 9 points is two scores, it gives you the chance to respond if you are the defence. Play overtime until one team is 9 points ahead of the opposition (or the end of the game, whichever is sooner). So you can win by 9 or more in overtime, or by being ahead at the end of OT. And I'd get rid of the tie in the NFL, and if it was still a tie, play continuous overtime with the rule I mentioned.

Sorry, the first sentence should say "9 point rule".

Ooh, and another advantage is that it's really easy to understand for fans. This can be three straight field goals too, as well as a TD-FG situation. But if your D gives points up, it's no good.

I think they should get rid of the rule they just made of no spiking the ball after first downs. On another prespective either start calling horsecollar penalties or get rid of them. Roy Williams still does this all of the time and rarely ever gets called for it. The worst is when they throw the flag and then pick it up. They need to lighten up on the quarterbacks they should be allowed to be bumped, with the current rules its like everybody else is playing tackle and their playing two hand touch

everyone does it (horsecollar) and i've seen it called once...i agree...either do it or don't...its total BS that the ref doesn't see it...

I remember seeing the Eagles get called a bunch of times for it, usually when it isn't even a horse collar!

I have to jump on the "Roughing the Passer" bandwagon. Punishments come to easily.

I was unaware that Bryant Gumbel was a rule.
