Rugby is Growing

The IRB and rugby union as a sport took a big step forward this past week.  Rugby Union in the sevens form will be included in the Pan-American games in 2011.  This is a huge step forward for rugby as a game.  Rugby in the sevens form is currently played in several international events, and is gaining popularity worldwide.

This is another big step toward getting Rugby included in the Olympics.  Rugby Sevens made it through to the final round as a consideration, but fell a few votes short last summer.  While Olympic rugby would not be as big as the World Cup, it would be a great platform to help spread the sport.

This is a great opportunity for the U.S.A.  The United States has already experienced mild success in the IRB Sevens series.  Now they will have another chance to showcase their newfound skills, and the young players they are bringing up.

Rugby sevens is great fun entertainment. Not as good a proper rugby union of course, but still, I love watching it.
