Royals Make Hochevar no. 1 Pick

10
Vote

The Kansas City Royals selected right-hander Luke Hochevar first in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. Hochevar was the 2005 SEC Player of the Year in 2005 when he recorded a 15-3 record with 154 strikeouts and a 2.26 ERA. He most recently pitched for the Fort Worth Cats of the American Association after failing to come to terms with the Los Angeles Dodgers who selected him in the 2005 draft with a supplemental pick (40th overall). A major concern surrounding the Scott Boras represented player is signability.

If he couldn't come to terms with the Dodgers, what makes the Royals think they will sign him?

He supposedly wants some serious cash, are the royals going to pony up?

Yeah, another young pitcher than can throw in the mid-to-upper 90s. That's exactly what the Royals needed. Sorry, I misspoke. I meant to say that's exactly what the Royals have drafted for the last 6 seasons, and none of them have panned out at all.

He agreed to a signing bonus of $2.98m with the Dodgers, and then renegged. He's going to want at least that from KC.

The royals are going to have to start somewhere. I know that contraction was a thought in baseball a few years ago, I assume KC is a big enough market. Ha, they would make a great double A team

JuT, that's been my suggestion. The Royals don't really have anyone deserving of the All-Star team. So, instead of sending that one mandatory player, let them play a game or two against a AAA ballclub during the All-Star break. I think it would do wonders for their attitudes (unless they lose, which they probably would) and it would be great publicity for the minor leagues!
