Rotation become ROT-ation, Tavarez Must Go

by Ron Sen, MD

Julian Tavarez' has done a 'credible' (gawd I hate that word) job as the Red Sox fifth starter. Do I really believe that? Maybe he serves as FOM (Friend of Manny) and talisman for Daisuke Matsuzaka, but throwing him out there every fifth day has become pure pain.

For the season, he is 5-7, E.R.A. of 5.15 and WHIP of 1.52. I won't argue that win-loss record accurately reflects pitching performance, but let's digress to WHYDFML (what have you done for me lately?).

In his last three starts, he has gone 14 2/3 innings, allowing 23 hits, 30 baserunners, 12 earned runs, and not surprisingly has lost all three games.

Yes, he has 'entertainment value' (wild gesticulations, bowling to first, peculiar expressions) and a great story (rags to Major League riches) but do the Sox have ANYBODY (including Jon Lester) who can pitch equally poorly or better?

Yes, Curt Schilling is mending and I'm not calling for Clay Buchholz or Devern Hansack? But Theo, for cripes sake, throw us a bone, here.

tavarez doesn't have to leave boston, just the rotation. he'd be fine in the pen.

even with tavarez not pitching well (or whatever you want to call it), we still got the best record in the bigs

I saw Lester pitch in Pawtucket at the end of June. He did not look like he had any command of his fastball. He needs a few more starts in AAA before he gets a call up. I bet many teams would give up a solid pitcher if the Sox parted with Ellsbury, but I doubt that will happen.

Here's the thing with Julian: before he came to Boston, he was a bullpen guy, and he started in Boston as a bullpen guy. They threw him in for a spot start last year, and he just stuck in the rotation. He struggled in his time in the bullpen last year. I know we love playing WHYDFML, but he was 4-0 in last 7 starts before the three game losing streak. I know we don't want to rush him, but Bucholz could be up by the end of the year. And if they trade Ellsbury, I will have an aneurysm.

I'm not arguing for exile for Tavarez to Kansas City, or Albuquerque. AND the Sox need some 'bargain' players to offset the high-priced spread. It's easy to see how Buchholz and Lester could be in the rotation NEXT season...although NOT as top-of-the-rotation guys. I suspect Sox fans don't expect all-star performances from either Lugo or Drew, just something close to their career averages...and breaking up the farm system for rent-a-players rarely works. Should the Sox be trying to work Murphy or Moss at first, with the possibility of moving Youkilis to 3rd, if no accommodation is met with Lowell?

Hmmm...best record in the MLB w/ Taverez? and he's a 5th starter...

Other 5th starters among the the leagues best teams include...Jake Westbrook (1-4, 6.08 ERA, 1.54 WHIP) and/or Paul Byrd (7-4, 4.41 ERA, 1.34 WHIP), Ervin Santana (5-10, 5.97 ERA, 1.54 WHIP), Jeff Weaver (2-6, 6.34 ERA, 1.64 WHIP)

Sooo, Taverez ain't all that bad...

Interesting baseball posts here this weekend. Yankee fans overestimate their nonplayoff team while Red Sox faithful scribes blast away on their first place playoff bound squad.

I got no problem with Drew or Lugo. Even with their (limited) production, we're still in first. As for Tavarez, I think he is better suited in the pen.

fair enough. but they have been in first place long enough for fans to get complacent. and they are 19-20 since June 1st

Don't Rag so hard on Tavarez yes he is a pain some time and for a 5th guy he is pretty good to have. But, in most of his starts he faces the oposing teams Aces like Johan Santana and Roy Halladay a couple of times. That is all
