Rossi to Villarreal--Is Fergie right to sell?

Manchester United have decided to part company with another talented striker. Giuseppe Rossi has been sold to Villarreal for a reported £6.7 million.

As a United fan I was looking forward to the NJ native making his mark at Old Trafford this season. In his few appearances for United he has scored 14 senior goals and he chipped in with 9 in 17 games last season for Parma to help keep them in Serie A for another season.

I know that move for Rossi and Alan Smith had been rumoured all summer long, but I was hoping in light of the Tevez delay Fergie would give the Garden Stater a shot at the starting 11.

It’s very hard to second guess Fergie’s decisions as he has kept United at or near the top of arguably the toughest league in Europe for the past decade, but I hope he decides to hold on to Smudge (Alan Smith) all the same--Tevez or no Tevez.

Yeah, I agree with Alex. The boy had potential, but with Tevez coming in he probably wouldn't have gotten the opportunity.

I am just concerned that we dumped an out and out striker. Don't get me wrong, the 2 R's, Nani, Anderson and Tevez are all great players, but they all prefer to be in a roaming role or on the wing, we need a centre forward. I was hoping we might go in for Anelka, but that looks unlikely. Rossi and/or Smith can be that striker in the middle IMO...maybe I'm wrong, we did pretty well last year without one. Damn that Fergie.

Assuming Carlos Tevez joins United this season, there no room for Rossi in the lineup. Frankly, United did a good job of getting good value for one of its spare parts.

I disagree. I think that with Rooney, Tevez, Ole and Saha as your only main strikers, I would have kept Rossi. Rossi could have been the first sub on the field and seen the lions share of the time in the FA Cup matches, much like Saha had done. Also considering that Saha gets injured when he breathes, keeping Rossi might have been a good thing.

We got a decent amount for him, I can't argue with that. But if he has a good year he could be worth double. But again, it's hard to second guess Fergie...he might have something up his sleeve.

I think Sir Alex did a fantastic piece of business with this one. Rossi was not going to see the pitch all that much so selling him pretty much on potential was a good move.

The price is unbelievable. £6.7 million is a desperately high amount. Considering the other prices around the Premier League - Saha and Smith will probably only fetch a million or so should they move on.
