Rooney Out for World Cup

I am not sure if this has been covered, but if you follow world soccer then you know English striker Wayne Rooney was injured a few days ago. When the contact happened between him and a Chelsea defender no one really noticed it until Rooney didn’t get up. It was the 79th minute of the league encounter between Chelsea and Manchester United. Even after Rooney was carried off the field in a stretcher the field medical crew examined him and Man Utd’s coach, Sir Alex Ferguson says that, he wont be playing until Monday, thinking it’s a small sprain, nothing serious. After Rooney was examined by his doctor he had come time find out that the break he has got in the fourth metatarsal is a small fracture. Rooney is out for six weeks which makes him almost not eligible for the world cup and even if he gets out of a cast in time he won’t be the same player, which puts England in a tight spot for strikers.

It's a big blow to England's chance. Rooney was going to be *the* guy. Even if he does play, it won't be at anywhere near full strength.

Bad luck for England once again. At least they have it relatively easy in group competition. If they can get thru the quarterfinals, maybe they'll have Rooney back for the stretch run. We can only hope.

I disagree with you. We have lots of top stikers. They have height in Peter Crouch. Michael Owen is still a great player (albeit, he has a slight injury himself at the moment). Darren Bent is one of the top scorers in the Premiership this year. No doubt losing Rooney is a big blow, but England should still compete for the World Cup. We have an easy group. We could play Germany in Round Two if they don't win their group, but I think we will beat them in their own back yard. I believe we are Number 4 to Brazil, Argentina, and Italy without Rooney. He is set to be named in the squad though, so he could play in the latter stages of the competition. One point I'd like to mention, it wasn't a "Semi-Finals" game, it was just another League game. :) We have separate Cup and League competitions. Also, we have lots of World-Class players in every position, so I still reckon we will get to the the rounds that end in "Finals" at worst.

Also, I forgot to mention this, Rooney is being put in an oxygen tank to help to speed up the recovery. I am happy to notice that non-Englishmen have heard about this though! I presume you are American, by saying "soccer," and I had no idea that people in America heard about this.
