Ronnie's 2006 NBA Draft 1st Round Thoughts

Setting hear watching the NBA "Trade Show" I mean Draft, I can't help but notice that this is nuts. Nobody wants to pick for their selfs. I mean come on draft pick is made and the trade was made before the pick. So the team picking was actually selecting the player that the other team wants. What happened to just trading the pick spots and selecting your own player!!!

Also what is up with the Knicks? They suck at drafting. I mean they select Renaldo Balkman in the top 20. This guy is a late 2nd round, if that, pick. The could have used Marcus Williams with this pick. Then at 29 they take a Temple guy in Mardy Collins. Not terrible but left a lot of talent on the board that is better than his.

Not bad top 5 picks but I think the best impact player for next year went at number 3. Adam Morrison is going to make a tremdous impact on Charlotte. He will compliment Emeka Okafor and make them really competitive.

J.J. Redick is a close second. He has a back problem but I think it will work it out and J.J. will be a great force in Orlando's backcourt.

Portland went crazy in the first round. Trading everything in site. I think one trade came across for the Rose Garden! Looks like they are building an entirely new roster. Looks good too.

The Celtics will regret not keeping Foye.

Yes I agree. Man he just has to sit and wait till the draft is over to make sure he don't get traded again. I mean twice with in a half hour.

I agree. Foye is a much more polished player than Telfair and a better scorer to compliment Pierce. I did laugh though picturing The Sports Guy having a mild heart attack when that trade was announced.

I think Portland was nuts for doing so much trading THIS YEAR. If you have the guts to trade away your guys and picks, then you should have pulled the trigger last year, where there was more talent. I think trading Telfare makes no sense, as they are in rebuilding mode and Telfare is the cornerstone of their franchise. He is the kind of guy you'd trade for in rebuilding mode. I don't get it.

I don't think he improved as much as they would have like from 04-05 to 05-06.

First of all, big bummer for Aldridge. He would have fit into Chicago's scheme perfectly. Now he has to go and deal with Portland. That's too bad. He would have been a great fit for the Bulls. Can anyone make sense of the deal the Rockets made? It seems to me that they got monumentally hosed. Like, the kind of hosed that the Grizzlies had to hold their breath to keep from asking..."seriously?" They traded Rudy Gay AND Stromile Swift for Shane Battier? A guy who could have very easily gone in the top five AND a proven role player like Swift, for Battier? A guy who has average more than 11 points per game in just one season...his rookie year of 2001? Seriously, can anyone make this make sense for me?

Houston made two strange moves: Swift/Gay for Battier (no disrespect to Shane's defense, but Swift & Gay have massive amounts of upside), and then the Novak stretch pick at #32. Novak wasn't what they needed, unless they had a particular yearning for the days of 6'10" Matt Bullard standing out at the 3-point line and hoisting treys. Confusing moves...

And for the record is there anything better than Morrison still rocking the thinner-than-vitale's-hair mustache and the out of control hair? I'm suprised he didn't show up to the draft in some ripped jeans and a Ramones t-shirt. Apparently Nash, Dirk, and Chris Kaman have a new member to embrace in the Bad Hair Club.

It doesnt matter what Portland does, that team is lost in the wilderness, and tonights draft proved that. Another lost team is the New York Knicks I have no idea what they were thinking with the 20th pick. Its a shame the draft is susposed to help the worse get better, adn this year the 2 worse teams in the league will leave the draft in even worse shape than they came in if that is possible.

Seriously. Marcus Williams was a no-brainer for NYK, and they went with... a guy who would have been there 9 picks later. Kudos to the Nets, though, for grabbing two Huskies!

They guy may have been there as an undrafted free agent after the draft...

That's what all the analysts were saying afterwards. They made all these moves they didn't need to make to get the players they got. Again, take Aldridge as an example. They didn't have to trade for that one. Charlotte was clearly not going to take him. He still would have been available at #4. You're right - they're totally lost right now.
