[edit] Biography

Ron Hunt (Ronald Kenneth Hunt) was born on February 23, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri. He made his Major League debut on April 16, 1963 for the New York Mets. In 1963, his rookie year, he hit .272 with 10 home runs and 42 RBI. Hunt played for the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Montreal Expos and St. Louis Cardinals over the course of his 12 year career.

Most people believe that Ron Hunt's best season was 1971, when he hit for a .279 average.

Ron Hunt was a star of the young New York Mets franchise. As a rookie in 1963, he finished second behind Pete Rose in the Rookie of the Year contest. In 1964, he became the first Met to be elected as a starter to the All Star team. He was a real fan favorite as he played "old-style" baseball, always getting his uniform dirty and doing whatever it took to help his team. In that vein, he once held the record for the most Hits by Pitch in a career.

In leaving the Mets, he became two degrees of separation with the 1969 Mets. He was traded after the 1966 season for Tommy Davis of the Dodgers. After the 1967 season, Davis was traded to the White Sox for Tommie Agee! The rest is Mets history.

Hunt also became a real star in his post-baseball career, running a school or camp in Missouri so that young players could learn the game.
