[edit] Biography

Ron Dayne will always be known as a bruising tailback. At 5-10, 245 lbs., Dayne combined power with a surprising amount of speed (4.66 40-yard dash out of high school) to become NCAA Division IA's all-time leading rusher in 1999 at the University of Wisconsin.

In his four year career with the Badgers, Dayne rushed for 6,397 yards, eclipsing the mark of 6,279 yards, set the previous year by Ricky Williams. He helped the Badgers to two consecutive Rose Bowl victories in 1998 and 1999, marking the first time a Big Ten school had ever won back-to-back titles and also the first time any Big Ten school had won three in a decade (the first coming in 1994).

Dayne won the 1999 Heisman Trophy, by over 1,000 votes, beating out the likes of Michael Vick, Drew Brees, and Shaun Alexander. His number 33 is now one of just two to appear on Camp Randall Stadium's upper deck facade (the other being the number 35 of 1954 Heisman Trophy winner Alan Ameche).

After being drafted by the New York Giants in the 2000 NFL Draft, Dayne's pro career started out promising, as he teamed with Tiki Barber to become known as "Thunder and Lightning," a mix of Dayne's power with Barber's quickness. Dayne rushed for 770 yards and five touchdowns in his rookie season and 690 yards and seven touchdowns in a 2001 season that saw the Giants lose to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV.

Since that year, Dayne's carries dropped substantially and he was released by the Giants following the 2004 season. He was signed by the Denver Broncos and returned to the spotlight with one of the best games of his career on Thanksgiving day against the Dallas Cowboys in 2005. He is now the number two back on the Broncos roster behind Tatum Bell.
