Roger Clemens Conspiracy

by user Pean

In the latest Sports Guy column, Simmons brings up an interesting conspiracy regarding Roger Clemens.

"My favorite conspiracy theory of all time (replacing Stern freezing the Knicks envelope in 1985) is the one about Clemens having to wait 50 days to play this season because of a super-secret steroids suspension."

Clemens was offered $12 million dollars to pitch the rest of the season for the Astros back in the beginning of the month, and the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, and Rangers have shown some interest. However, Clemens has yet to make a decision. What gives? Enjoying the time off Roger, or is this part of a big conspiracy? It wouldn't be the first MLB conspiracy. Remember when MLB spied on us?

There's a similar theory regarding Michael Jordan -- one I don't believe -- that one of his retirements was due to allegations of his gambling habit. As the theory goes, the NBA found out, and in lieu of a suspension, David Stern just let him take the year off. The Clemens one, though, makes no sense. MLB would have done the same with an injured Rafael Palmeiro. He had already hit the milestones; he was already on the DL; it'd have been easy for them to "suggest" he retire.

A yr? More like 3-4 months. Palmeiro and the crew testified on Mar. 17. He was supsended ~ Aug. 1, figure after at least a month of appeals.

Yeah, it's a steroids conspiracy. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with him being old and indecesive. He put off choosing whether or not to play last year for months. Delaying a decision is nothing new for Roger. The fact that people have to generate this kind of nonsense to occupy themselves is stunning.

The circumstantial evidence suggesting that Clemens is (or was, anyway) a juicer, is overwhelming. Pitchers -- including Clemens and Randy Johnson -- have not received the scrutiny that offensive players have. And both Clemens and Johnson are white which historically has never been irrelevant. It doesn't make me accept the proposed suspension hypothesis, though, as interesting as it is.

Clemens makes for good reading. But steroids? Come on, let's get real. Not all players are "hooked" on steroids/done steroids. As someone already suggested: it makes for good reading.

As for Michael Jordan's gambling--that I do believe. He looks a lot like Pete Rose to me, or am I color blind?
