Rodney Harrison gets no respect...again

9
Vote

by user Drpatriot

In a recent piece by Sports Illustrated, the 10 most feared NFL players have been highlighted in full glory. I'd just like to point out that Rodney Harrison wouldn't be particularly happy with this piece. Why? There are two reasons.

  • First, he is getting the stiffarm in his picture. While other players like Roy Williams and Keith Bulluck are making huge tackles in their picture, good ol' Rodney is getting the stiffarm.
  • Second, he is ranked at #10. This is in a list where special teams man Jason Short is at #9 and wide receiver Anquan Boldin is ranked #5.

Not to be outdone, ESPN.com made their own Top 10, which we can vote on to see who is really the toughest. Rodney Harrison isn't even on this list, getting the shaft because of players like Hines Ward and Donovan McNabb. How disappointing.

To finish it off, I'll give my own opinion of the Top Ten Most Feared NFL Players:

  1. Ray Lewis: I'll rank a guy who killed someone higher than the rest any day. Lewis is also one of the best players of the early millenium.
  2. Olin Kreutz: Can't argue with Sports Illustrated here. Kreutz broke the jaw of a guy on his team who weighs 315 pounds and stands at 6'7". I know who I don't want to meet in a dark alley.
  3. Rodney Harrison: Still one of the hardest-hitting players to come through the league ever.
  4. Cory Schlesinger: This Lions fullback set the record for "most broken face masks" in 2003 at 23. Now that's toughness.
  5. Maurice Clarett: Self-explanatory.
  6. Brian Urlacher: Urlacher didn't even make Sports Illustrated's Top Ten. And I thought Rodney got no respect.
  7. Sean Taylor: A hard-hitter and a criminal to boot.
  8. J.P. Losman: I don't know about you, but I'm sure Bills fans are scared for their life whenever this guy comes onto the field.
  9. Steve McNair: The toughest QB in the NFL at this time is never afraid to take a tough hit. This guy has my full respect.
  10. Donovin Darius: Sure, he was out all last year, but this guy is still one out the toughest players around.

Ray Lewis didn't kill anyone. He witnessed a double murder in a nightclub (along with dozens of others, but he was the only one named), refused to testify and was acquitted anyway. Come on... that was unneccessary. Boldin is a badass, but I agree he was too high on the list... just remember, SI's list ALWAYS suck - I think they do it on purpose to get people like us riled up - but your list is MUCH more appropriate.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!! I nominate this for whiniest Armchair article ever. You're complaining because a player you like was "only" ranked 10th and because HE'S GETTING STIFFARMED IN HIS PHOTO?!?! Good LeBron, man! I do appreciate that you took the time to put together your own list, but enough with the whining. Nobody comes off less sympathetic than a whiny New England sports fan.

I think that you missed the point of the article. As you can see at the bottom, the article is categorized under "Sports Humor." I'm poking fun at myself, Rodney Harrison, both sports networks, and my fellow New England fans.

For those who don't immediately understand the joke, like Friskysman, Rodney Harrison is often quoted as saying that he doesn't get respect; though the entire Patriots team is associated with this quote, none more than Rodney Harrison. By complaining that Rodney wasn't getting enough respect and slamming the various news sources for it, I was imitating him and, therefore, making a joke about him, the entire Patriots philosophy and, by association, Patriots fans in general. Sheesh. This is now the second time someone (or more) has mistakenly slammed one of my humor pieces, and the second time I've had to explain that it was a joke...I guess I need to be less subtle about my approach.

Sorry dude. I honestly did read the whole thing to make sure I wasn't missing anything and I didn't catch the humor. I guess it just needed to be a little more ridiculous, though I should have caught on with the whole stiffarm thing. My bad. But the good news is, I now completely agree with you.

You have to admit though, my original comment has 5 up-votes so far so I must not be the only one that didn't catch the tongue-in-cheek.

I'd argue that Maurice Clarett isn't an NFL player.

My other point is that you are confusing toughness and being feared. I don't think McNair is feared anymore. In his prime, he could beat you with his arm and legs, so teams feared playing him. No longer. As far as toughness goes, that's a whole different list... new topic anyone?

I didn't catch the humor in this article either. Here's a few other players that should be feared if they aren't feared already: Mike Alstott, Lorenzo Neal, Larry Allen, John Lynch. Personally, no one is tougher than Steve Mcnair.

Maybe the difference is, lots of those other guys are tough on the field but clean players. As tough as harrison is and as good a leader as he is, he is not a clean player. I'm also offended B-Dawk gets to cred. and btw...donovan is a tough guy...4 TDs on a broken ankle is pretty good...
