Rodgers as Trade Bait?

While discussing Aaron Rodgers in an interview yesterday, Green Bay Packers GM Ted Thompson said, "...We did a lot of work on him prior to the draft and we've studied him since he's been here. The proof is still in the pudding, you know, when he finally gets that shot to take over a team, whether it's this team or somewhere else, or any quarterback for that matter, it's playing the games and doing all the stuff that happens in an NFL game...."

To reiterate, "...whether it's this team or somewhere else..."

Do the Packers have plans other than Rodgers for the future of the QB position? Word out of camp is that the coaching staff is not exactly enthused by the development they've seen from Rodgers over the years. Personally, I think that T^2 is just blowing smoke, but he is keeping his options open. If a generous enough offer is out there, it wouldn't surprise me if he pulled the trigger on a trade.

There looks to be some pretty good QB's coming out next season.

I can't imagine they'd trade him now. If they were going to, they missed their chance to about five times. There are few teams right now in dire need of a QB, and there are other backups-for-hire out there (e.g. Matt Cassel) who will definitely be available next year. So the price they'll get is going to be low.

That was another thought I had. If they were going to trade him, why not trade him for Moss right before the draft? His choice of words is interesting though. He doesn't realize that comments like this can tend to make people read to much into it. Or does he?

I'd be really shocked if they were to trade Rodgers unless they thought Favre would play 2 more years (certainly possible, but I hope not) or that they could pick up a good but cheap veteran qb for a couple years. To plan on taking a rookie next year and starting him without even knowing what spot in the draft they will have would be insane.

Agreed! Why use a 1ts round pick on a rookie only to not play him for two years and then trade him at the worst possible time? Why didn't Thompson make this statement about 3 months ago when there were a lot more teams looking for QBs and Rogers would have had a achance to learn a new offense and be ready for the season? This whole thing makes very little sense.
