[edit] Biography

Roberto Kelly (Roberto Conrado (Gray) Kelly) was born on October 1, 1964 in Panama City, Panama. He made his Major League debut on July 29, 1987 for the New York Yankees. Most people believe that Roberto Kelly's best season was 1990, when he slugged 15 home runs, stole 42 bases, hit for a .285 average and knocked in 61 runs. Kelly played for the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves, Montreal Expos, Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers over the course of his 14 year career.

Kelly was signed directly out of high school in 1982 as an amateur free agent by the New York Yankees. After brief call-ups in 1987 and 1988 Kelly won the Yankees starting centerfield job in 1989 taking over for Claudell Washington. In 1989, his rookie year, he hit .302 with 9 home runs, 48 RBI and 35 stolen bases. In 1991 Kelly became the fifth Yankee to have atleast 20 home runs and 20 steals in the same season. In 1992, Kelly was named to the American League All-Star Team. However, during the '92 season Kelly started to lose playing time to a young Bernie Williams and was traded to the Reds in November in a deal including Paul O'Neill.

In his first year with the Reds, Kelly had a 14-game hitting streak and was named to the 1993 National League All-Star Team. Unfortunately, in June, Kelly separated his shoulder and missed the remainder of the season. The following May he was traded to the Atlanta Braves in a deal involving Deion Sanders. He lasted less than a year in Atlanta, being traded twice in 1995. First, in April, the Braves shipped him to the Expos. Then, just one month later in May, the Expos traded him to the Dodgers.

After stops in Minnesota, Seattle and Texas, Kelly finished his career in 2000 where it had began, with the Yankees (He did sign with the Colorado Rockies in 2001, but never played with them). Kelly made the playoffs four times in his career, with the Dodgers in 1995, the Mariners in 1997, and the Rangers in 1998 and 1999. Throughout his career Roberto Kelly was considered an effective and valuable fourth outfielder. Kelly had speed, the ability to play all three outfield positions and he excelled at hitting left handed pitching. In 2006, Kelly was named the South Atlantic League Manager of the Year and on November 16, 2007 he was named the San Francisco Giants new first base coach and hitting instructor.
