Rivalries old and new

I am older than most of the people here in this Wiki, and I grew up in New York City, so I remember the great centerfield rivalry: "Which one is better: Mantle, Mays, or Snider?" Now, a lot of books rate Mays at the top of this group, but I'm enough of a Yankee fan to say I still favor Mickey, and would rather have him at his best than Willie if I could put together a team.

A few years ago a new rivalry hit the sports pages, though it was not all in one city or even one part of the country (though 2 out of three were in the AL East!), the great shortstop rivalry: "Which one is better: Jeter, Rodriguez, or Garciaparra?" The fact that only one of these is still playing shortstop, I think, helps answer that question (In fach, Garciaparra is not only no longer a shortstop, but no longer in the AL!) But some people are still trying to set up a rivalry between A-Rod and Derek Jeter.

The fact is, A-Rod is one of the best third basemen the Yankees have ever had, and Jeter is the best shortstop (And I say this remembering Phil Rizzuto, who I would have called the greatest up to Jeter's arrival). And certainly both are great players, and if A-Rod wasn't, the Yanks and Red Sox wouldn't have been both trying as hard as they did to get him. And it speaks volumes about how great a team player A-Rod is that he was willing to move to third base so the Yankees could keep Jeter at short. But the Yankee management certainly felt that Jeter was the better shortstop, which is why he's there and A-Rod is one place over to his right.

Don't get me wrong. I am not putting A-Rod down. The Yankees need both those two players. But Let's get the facts straight.

I think Bill James would call it peak value vs. career value. He argues that the 4 or 5 best years of the Commerce Comet are better than the Say Hey kid. In new york from 1951-57 Willie's OPS+'s were 120, 102, 175, 176, 146, 173 vs. the Mick's 117, 162, 143, 158, 181, 210, 223.

I guess that's what I meant when I said "I ... would rather have him at his best than Willie if I could put together a team."

Having seen Mantle play a doubleheader in the 60's in Kansas City I can see where he would be rated over Mays and Snider. It is amazing that he played in over 140 games in all but five seasons of his career considering his injury history. Ken Griffey Jr. already has eight seasons with less than 140 games played. Mantle probably played hurt more than any player in baseball history. If he had been healthy he would have had over 600 home runs but it is a testament to his athletic ability he was able to hit 536 homers not having the benefit of being healthy for most of them. A-Rod may very well be the very best third baseman in Yankee history even if he hasn't been with them for that long.

You really have the point. Mantle put up the stats he did even though he was playing hurt for so much of his career. That's one reason I think Mantle was the greatest player I ever lived to see (guys like Ruth and Cobb were out of baseball before I was born).

None of these namby pamby lounge lizards today would play with bad legs like Mantle had. Can you see J.D. Drew playing hurt like that?...no way. He would rather sit on the bench and collect his $13 or $14 million. He is only about 26 homers and 60 RBI's behind A-Rod this season.
