Born on May 11, 1907 in Decatur, Alabama, Rip Sewell (Truett Banks Sewell) played for the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates over the course of his 13 year career. Sewell broke into the bigs on June 14, 1932 with the Detroit Tigers, and put up a 4.08 ERA in 176.1 innings pitched in 1939, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Rip Sewell's best season was 1943, when he posted a 2.54 ERA, won 21 games and struck out 65 batters.
