[edit] Biography

Ricky Santos is the starting quarterback for Division I-AA New Hampshire, and winner of the 2006 Walter Peyton Award, the I-AA equivalent of the Heisman trophy. (Tony Romo won the award in 2002.)

Santos attended Bellingham High School (Massachusetts) and was a letterman in football, basketball, baseball, and track&field. In football, he was a two-time Tri-Valley M.V.P., twice named the Division V Player of the Year, was a two-time Metro West Player of the Year, and as a senior, won all-State honors. He broke the state touchdown record and led his teams to two Massachusetts High School Super Bowl titles.

[edit] Statistics

  • 2005: 301 completions in 429 attempts (70.2%), with 39 TD to 9 INT, and 21 sacks.
  • 2006: 293 completions in 432 attempts (67.8%), with 29 TD to 7 INT, and 35 sacks.
  • 2007: 256 completions in 350 attempts (73.1%), with 24 TD to 7 INT, and 30 sacks.

[edit] Scouting Report

Santos is a solid passer, with adequate mobility and great accuracy. He can read defenses well and make solid throws on the run. He is a natural leader and has brought success to the UNH program over the past 3 years. While not incredibly fast or elusive, Santos can make things happen with his feet. He doesn't often make great decisions when defenses bring heavy pressure, and he has trouble stretching the ball down the field with only mediocre arm strength. He would need to work on speeding up his release in the pros. The biggest knock against Santos isn't his physical attributes, but rather where he comes from. UNH is a small D-1AA program, and he played almost exclusively out of the shotgun, during his college career. He'll certainly have to work on drop back passing in the NFL.

In his junior year, Santos won the 2006 Walter Payton Award, which is basically the D-1AA Heisman. Santos is certainly not projected to become a regular NFL starter, but will likely be a good backup for someone once he becomes acclimated to the NFL game.
